![]() | Re: Fatality in Devil's Eye Spring... Out of the respect for the victim and his family I think it is grossly inappropriate to leak bits and pieces of info from the recovery team. Wait for the full IUCC report to be released to the cave community with the verifiable facts. Well put..... anything other then the report should be seen as speculation...and left alone. Sad day for everyone and my thoughts go out to everyone. Family, Friends, and the hard job that Lamar and the recovery team does. |

Guys, IUCRR have been doing a very good job at collecting data at the rescue and recoveries they were involved in. They're well trained, very experienced, and have a sound protocol in place. Just have a look at their website, this is likely one of those few times when some usable data actually is collected and becomes available. Hats off to the recovery team, and condolences to the family and friends of the victim.

![]() | Re: Fatality in Devil's Eye Spring... There is no speculation stated here...just the facts as reported by one of the two primary recovery divers, via phone conversation this morning. I leave it to you to speculate ( as we all are doing, or will do), but the facts as found by the divers are there. Why would they make things up, they are both extremely experienced divers, and I know one has done numerous recoveries over at least 35 years? They know the drill, they know how to observe and gather facts...and the IUCRR will use thier observations and report to a large extent to try (I repeat...TRY!) to determine what happened. Mostly it will still remain conjecture (see the Eagle's Nest double drowining accident in 2004...no one really knows, to this day, what happened there). Mostly, in the case of experienced, divers (baring obvious physical catastrophe), we rarely get the real answer. BTW....I've been there and done that at least six times (including EN) so I am not speaking out of wanting to be a hero...just stating the facts as reported by those who were there. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Fatality in Devil's Eye Spring... Mark was a good guy. I'm deeply saddened to hear this. I spoke to the person who found him. I agree totally with the posting re leaking information, and so would that individual. Please let's wait until the parties close to this have had time to analyze the evidence carefully before we start jumping to conclusions. In particular, I for one will be pretty pissed if anyone starts talking about diver error with no evidence to back that up. Mark was a very bright guy, and in my conversations with him I always found him to be a very serious, analytic diver. And even if it was error, guesing at what type of error is uncalled for at this stage. Even if NO report ever comes out, pointless speculation is no more constructive than silence. While I'm new to rebreathers, I'm not new to tech diving, and every post-death internet "analysis" in threads on userboards I've seen has been risible - and usually disrespectful to the deceased, and to the family of that person. Conjecture is pointless. Please let's pay his family and friends the respect of waiting until the full evidence is in and has been explored.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Fatality in Devil's Eye Spring... Sad news and thanks to the recovery team. I'm with Micha on this one too. I know that the IUCRR has promised a report on this incident--but I'm not holding my breath. I sincerely hope that they have something educational to tell us when this is over. However, historically they haven't been real forthcoming with information. I'm sure Ken and company are stand up guys, but once they turn their findings over to Law Enforcement, I don't know how much control they can continue to exert over where that information goes.I am curious if really a report will come out.... Has anyone seen any sort of 'official' report on Jeff Thompson, Ron Simmons, or Elizabeth Halbach? I rest my case. Brian

If I'm informed well, his name is Mark Fyvie.Mark was an IANTD instructor who lived in Switzerland. Mark will be dearly missed. Our thoughts are with his family. This info was provided to the regional IANTD instructors by our regional IANTD representative (Benelux - Belgium). ciao, Tino. |
