In my experience (real life bail - full flooded loop) I found it to be a great stress reducer to be able to breathe whilst changing regs. Feels weird at 1st but after few breaths your mind accepts it. also makes drinking while wearing the ffm much easier. I agree....it is a bit of a mind twister at first taking the primary out and nose breathing....But it certainly works!!all my p-ported 2nd stages have normal mouthbite pulled over them - so anyone can use them. If I need to use them i pull off the mouthbite - it doubles as protection for the fitting too. Ive also breathed direct from a p-ported 2nd stage underwater and although not comfortable it works fine -I found my lips would seal. I will have to try that. I have already tried breathing from the p'port and I saw it was possible but strange things run through your mind when you think about what you're doing!!The benefit of nose breathing off side reg is you can ALWAYS breathe at all times. Yes......and a lot less stressful knowing you CAN still breathe.Lance

Dave do you think on a nova ffm as soon as you got the cocktail that you would have been able to start nose breathing, spit out the dsv, vomit out the dsv p-port hole until sorted (while still nose breathing) then connect bail out 2nd stage in dsv p -port? My thinking is thats better than a caustic with normal dsv/half mask as you can breathe whilst vomiting. Hi Mike,Ive 'simulated' this (along with realistic vomiting sounds) whilst sat in a rather up market restaurant in thailand during Song Hong 2 expedition (much to Matts embarisment) - it seams doable (and offers benefit that can still breathe whilst vomiting) but as you have been there and done that for real (vomiting after caustic) I wanted your opinion - what do you think? My only fear would be vomitting so much that I filled the Nova up to nostril level, now I know that is quite a lot of spew but once the mask fills in that way it could be really stressful, I guess the answer is that I don't know for sure. The other thing is that when you spew back the cocktail, what you spew back is still caustic, I guess if you could still keep the mouth-bite in all would be well to a degree, apart from the fact it would be coated too. The real problem would be dislodging the mouthpiece, spewing into the mask itself and getting some caustic in your nostrils or worse, your eyes. As you and I both know, from bitter experience, prevention is better than cure! All I know is that with a standard half-mask, Jetstream and 200 litres a minute, I got back ok. Cheers, Dave.
