I loaded the gun, aimed it at my head and asked my YBOD to pull the trigger.

I loaded the gun, aimed it at my head and asked my YBOD to pull the trigger.

This is how dumb I feel.

Had not dived my unit for 4 months, so I sat down and did a real good clean, re-lubed, new batteries, some fresh sorb and some spit and polish.

Checked in my mind, everything was there, nothing left on the table.

Dive 1/2 felt some head aches ( just put it down to lack of Rebreather diving etc, and hotdogs)... dive 3/4 was all good.

Got home, opened it to wash it out, and I left the large o-ring spacer out of my scrubber unit.

I always thought to my self, how can people forget it ... Mine was found under a book on my desk.

Thanks YBOD, for not pulling the trigger on me, and letting me learn from this mistake ..

I have unloaded the gun, kissed the unit good night and not told the GF about this, else it will be up for sale.

ME =

Sorry just hand to publicly humiliate myself ..

Well done for letting us know and glad you got away with it.

Hope it reminds everyone to check that all the vital bits are there.

I highly doubt if you were the first one ever to have done that mistake.

The only time I had helped an unconscious diver from the water was when he did the same thing.

However, the effect is different on different people apparently...
  • In your case, you felt headaches on dives 1 and 2, yet nothing on dives 3 and 4.
  • For him, he passed out very quickly as soon as he started to swim in very moderate current
  • For me when I tried to find out what happened without opening the entire unit by breathing from his unit for 10 mins (on surface) , simulating hyperventilation/etc and not a symptom
I don't know your physical size, but he was fairly muscular (i.e. body builder type) and I am a lot less muscular than him. So I am thinking it has to do with the level of O2 metabolic rate and, subsequent, CO2 production - assuming level of exertion is constant.

Glad to hear that you are safe, and learnt a valuable lesson BTW.

Re: I loaded the gun, aimed it at my head and asked my YBOD to pull the trigger.

Hello,

Excellent and important post. Thank you. As a result of your post I will endeavor to take apart and clean my unit in an area free and clear of other stuff so that any forgotten parts are clearly visible.

Again, thank you!

Yes, thank you for the post. Will you consider using a checklist after this incident?

Re: I loaded the gun, aimed it at my head and asked my YBOD to pull the trigger.

It was a bad design feature on the classic. Such an easy mistake to make and one that wont show up in pre dive tests.

Glad your OK and well done for the memory jog.

I don't think the Vision has loose 0 rings? The KISS definitely hasn't nor does the rEvo.

Are there any other units out there with a loose O ring of this importance?

Re: I loaded the gun, aimed it at my head and asked my YBOD to pull the trigger.

Glad you survived.

Here's a tip, when you remove the o-ring and spacer loop the o-ring through the spacer and pull tight, then when you go to replace the spacer the answer is in front of your eyes.

There's no madness in method.

Cheers,

Dave Cooper.

Vision has the same spacer/o-ring design as classic. Have forgotten it myself once. I put the Rebreather together and took a look at my closet to find the o-ring still there..

My instructor taught that there were only two places for the O ring and spacer. 1st was installed and if it was'nt in the assmebled scrubber then we hung it inside the case on the scrubber strap velcroed cloesd. That way there is no way to install the scrubber without the Oring and spacer since they interfere with the scrubber strap if you leave them out.
