Are you repacking your cannister ?

yo all

We have had some interesting discussion lately to Co2 related issues that provided me with interesting insight and made me think about my own practice of ccr diving as well as hardware related configuration issues.

- Re-using your partial used scrubber material
- The need of having a BOV

And now this video was made available where it was stated that it is common practice by some divers to repack their scrubber cannisters .....

I would like to know how many are out there really doing that.

Are you repacking your scrubber cannister with partial used material ?

greetings
Matt

Re: Are you repacking your cannister ?

I am always reluctant to answer such polls when the answer I give could result in a "who trained you" type question but yes I used to repack until I heard some compelling arguments not to. Never had a problem when I did but it was really a crap shoot.

No, never - bare in mind I've only been diving CCR for 2 years, but I always thought that repacking was an urban myth... its beggars believe that people were taught this.

Cheers

Re: Are you repacking your cannister ?

I was taght to not repack, bag the scrubber overnight if it was going to be used again, and to pack a solid tight scrubber with lots of tapping.

I have since seen the AP video about not tapping, settling, and making a tight scrubber. Any thoughts on the dangers or advantages of a tightly packed Evo canister vs the looser version in the AP vid?

Re: Are you repacking your cannister ?

Hello,

I'm fairly new to rebreather diving but I have never don't this -- and I don't recall hearing anyone suggest it before I saw the video. Perhaps it is a regional thing?

Most of the myths I've been taught NOT to do involve storage of new or used sorb.

Big no-no from everyone who ever taught me anything about RBs, so I heed their words.

On all of the Rebreather's I have used, I have ALWAYS tight-packed the scrubber. Even when the scrubber has spring to load the sorb (i.e. Golem, EDO, APD, etc)

Reason: I was taught to do that 10 years ago, and have been doing it eversince.

Result: Never had any channeling issue. Had some over-breathing-the-unit issues, but that was unit-specific and also depending on the actual dive conditions.

I have never seen anyone packs the way APD recommends in the video, so can't comment but (personally) not going to change what works (for a long time).

That would be a no.

But, the rEvo serial scrubber/canister-design allows for re-use of 50% in a changing cycle - Its not repacking at all, but another approach to increase effeciency and safety in Sorb-usage.

Re: Are you repacking your cannister ?

Well I only passed my MoD1 this week but I was taught that repacking with used material was a big no no. So no I wont be doing this anytime soon.
