Second hand unit sales.

Would you sell a second hand unit to someone who wasn't qualified or under training?

Re: Second hand unit sales.

NO WAY,

forget about the possible liability, what about living with myself.
When I sold my Dolphin it was shipped to the instructor (and yes, I verified the instructor)

I did the same with my cochran lifeguard computer and my uwatec air02/ oxy2 setup.

The guy that I originally purchased the Dolphin from didn't give a damn about any of it though. I didn't get trained until after the purchase (not brave enough to learn with instruction

Re: Second hand unit sales.

I don't know why it would be that different than selling some other complex piece of machinery...training is imperative, that should be understood and it should be up to the buyer to get it.

I make it very clear to anyone inquiring that they should not even get on the loop above water without beginning formal instruction. with the one that I have sold I had the buyer sign a very explicite waiver that pretty much spelled it all out.

Anyone attempting to dive a rebreather without instruction is playing with fate. Home builders are in another league perhaps, but in this day and age with quality instruction readily available, there's just no good reason to take part in such an unforgiving learning curve on a comercially available unit on your own.

IMHO

Re: Second hand unit sales.

Yes. The price: $100 Brazilian dollars. Priceless.

Re: Second hand unit sales.

In the case of an O2ptima, yes I'd sell it, but with the codes wiped out. Then it's basically unusable. Handset codes would be provided once proof of certification is provided or I'd turn the codes over to a qualified instructor, who is training the individual. I'd also copy all the release Docs and have the individual sign off before the sale. Other than that, no way.

Re: Second hand unit sales.

I would ask the requisite, cursory questions just to make sure that the prospective buyer knew the general knowledge; as opposed to some clueless rich kid trying to be cool with daddy's money, for example. But beyond that, I have to agree with Gill - what is the difference between selling someone a second hand car or anything else with the potential to do grevious bodily harm or kill someone? We seem to love using the car analogy here on Rebreather World , so those of us who have sold a car used ... did you make the buyer provide you with a copy of his or her license or other proof of experience?

I personally have owned and then sold second hand three motorcycles (one Yamaha FZR and two Honda CBRs) and I know for a fact that one was wadded by the owner less than a month after he bought it. Now I don't want to sound cavalier or callous because I definitely don't wish anyone any harm; but I didn't lose one wink of sleep or feel badly for a second that he ate it ... his decision, his assessment of his own skills, his risk, his mistake. If I hadn't sold my bike to him, someone else would have.

Same goes for a Rebreather - I'd ask the basic questions, get the baseline comfort level that they know what they're getting into and then enjoy ... try not to get yourself dead. I somehow managed not to for a while now and I'm only a few chocolates ahead of Forest Gump ...

And DAMN Richie - quit beating me to the punch with these posts ... and making me look bad!

Re: Second hand unit sales.

What might be interesting is a "Would/Did you Buy a second hand rebreather" if you are Qualified/not qualified Poll?

Re: Second hand unit sales.

I would warn the person of the dangers and after that it's their responcibility.

would you ask to see a driving licence if you sold your car?

With a car they could kill more then just them selves.

The problem is you have this thing called a "job" that interferes with the timing of your responses as well as your ability to dive during the week with us!
