Hi Rebreather World

I do not know if this is Rebreather related, but sad news:

My goodness - sad news (whether on OC or CC).

150 lost lives in Dahab. What is it that makes it so dangerous?

Cheers,

I dived the blue hole a few years ago, It kind of takes your breath away. You dive down through a pool, and at about 50m, a big tunnel opens towards the sea. If you dive through the tunnel, you pass about 56m. The seabed starts at about 80m and keep going deeper at an angle of 45 degrees when you swim through the tunnel.

Read/see more here:

Blue Hole, Dahab a project to map the Blue Hole and surrounding canyons

It's a beautiful dive by the way...

Thanks - I can see why it lures people. Very beautiful indeed.

Maybe one day....

Its reputation makes it a challenge and people often cant resist a challenge.
Andyp and I couldn't so we had a go for 100 when our previous deepest dive was 63m

The arch can be done at 50m or at 100m and any depth in between. on the exit there is a slope at about 110, then the seabed drops off almost vertically to a reputed 800m+ Its quite a sight.

If you chicken out half way through the arch and turn back its inky blue black looking back into the blue hole. I thought it was a bit freaky and i was on 14/65 I could well imagine someone on air or a much lesser mix having a big wave of narcosis

The scale of the thing gets you as well.

Andyp and I dropped to 100 (ended up 102 through a bit of silliness ) and I remember going to fin up and thinking dam i am not moving. So i finned harder but felt I wasn't getting anywhere. In fact I was doing fine but it didn't feel like it looking up 100m of underwater cliff.

I think when i ascend off a wreck there is no visual reference point so there is no sensation of how slow you are moving. 5/m a min is pretty damed slow.
With the wall in front of you the slowness of the ascent is apparent. This sent a shiver down the spine as well.

All in all an odd place and its not surprising that so many people are lured down from easy blue stuff to the scary blue stuff.

Hmmm - not one to be taken lightly, that's for sure. If the depth doesn't get you, the ascent will.....

Cheers,

Re: Dahab claims two more

There's a video on you tube of a free diver (german I believe) swiming through the arch. I can't find the link right now but search for "free dive, dahab". Talk about a challenge!
Sad news about the two divers.

You need a stronger mix mate! It's still sloping at 140m and beyond that. I think when it does drop it goes to around 200m but I'm not sure. That's what all the Russians are getting round the corner anyway.

I think the appeal is obvious - the reputation, easy access and the funnel shape is quite reassuring.

I suspect the majority of those who died will have been on air. The classic example was the Russian instructor who descended fast, got narked and expired at 90m. The film is on Mark Ellyatt's sight IIRC.

I know what you mean about taking time to come up Mark. I had similar when coming up the side. It was at the bottom bit under the arch and because there is a horizontal element as well as vertical, it seems there is a lot of effort just to go up. Once the walls get more vertical, it goes as normal. An optical illusion sort of? Quite nice to have something to lean on though. It is very boring in there - pretty dead unless you pop out over the lip and into the sea itself.

Yep, i have seen the sand when i was at about 90m. It deffo looked like a few fin kicks and i could grab a handfull of sand. I was told it was about 120m and the 1st thing i thought was **** it looked only about 30ft away

I love the blue hole arch dive, nothing hard about it its just some of the planks that go there is the problem. one time I have been coming out at around 65m and have watched in disbleif as 4 single tank divers flew down past me, i watched as the exhaled bubbles got futher and further away, the next min whooshhhhhhhhh they go blathering past me on there way up (they did not go through the arch but i reckon got down to at least 80m just out side the front of the arch and then bladderd back up.

I am not saying that it cant go wrong for properly equipt/trained divers using trimix, but the no. of fools going there and diving the arch un-supervised beggers belief.
