Good Medical Information

Was going thru EXPLORER's medical kit, refreshing medications, etc., and also contemplating the recent thread that dealt with in water deco, as well as other boat-environment emergencies, etc. EXPLORER carries a medical kit that would be considered "more than adequate" by any standards, and is modelled on the mandatory medical kit required for offshore sailing by no less than HRH The Queen herself, the UK having some of the best required kit regulations of anywhere. One required component is the "Ships Captain's Medical Guide", which naturally is part of EXPLORER's library. While thumbing thru it, I realized: Wonder of wonders... being an official document, it's available free as a PDF download. Might be of interest.

Ships Captain's Medical Guide

Just a statistic: EXPLORER carries over 100 pounds of emergency medical gear. Out on the open sea, we look out for ourselves.

As well as "Conduct of burial of the dead at sea". Possibly for those who failed to receive proper care for the geet.

I'll have you know that we do NOT carry a shroud aboard EXPLORER....

Re: Good Medical Information

Can ANYONE explain to me why its essential to "brush the hair off the face" and then "secure the jaw with a bandage" before sewing a corpse into a shroud for burial at sea???

The section makes sombre reading but you can't help to wonder at some of it....

The wonder of this kind of thing is that there is no doubt some amazingly good reason for it. It'll be lost in the mists of history for most, but passed down generation to generation amongst a small community of naval chappies who make sure that it is observed. I was involved with the UK forces (RAF specifically) for quite a few years and some of my dearest memories are of the reasons behind traditions and rules. Reading Queens Regs or chatting to a Discip NCO can brighten up a rainy duty afternoon and leave you with a fund of stories for the future ;-)

If you really want to find out, why not go down to the Naval Dockyard at Portsmouth and ask one of the old salts who does tours of the ships. They are all ex-Navy and have a fund of wonderful stories. I went round Victory once and in about 15 minutes had learned the history of at least 10 well known phrases or sayings (square meal, rubbing salt in the wound, etc. etc) as well as having some naval traditions explained.

Cheers,

So you can see if you are disposing of the right body and so they can't scream if you aren't?

Agreed 100%, no different here in our Navy.

For now, my answer would be "Because the Queen *wishes* it to be so..."
(and apparently she does *not* wish you to have the clap, either....)

Past all of that, there's good stuff to be had in the book. The actual printed version is a good reference.

I've got another gem, from EBay: "A Trawler Captains Medical Reference". It's circa 1926, and is the book taken aboard by the old North Sea trawlers. All I can say is.... you didn't want to get hurt out there. Instructions for field amputation aboard a trawler... well, I guess at least they had lots of sharp knives. Hiden in all of it are some real tidbits though.

heres a question- anybody know why the uscg still requires inspected vessels to carry a tube of burn creme-with a valid expiration date no less-when burn creme is no longer recomended by any medical authority?

even better anybody know how to get that rule changed?

nice to see even the brits dont put butter on a booboo..................
