One required component is the "Ships Captain's Medical Guide", which naturally is part of EXPLORER's library. While thumbing thru it, I realized: Wonder of wonders... being an official document, it's available free as a PDF download. Might be of interest. The wonder of this kind of thing is that there is no doubt some amazingly good reason for it. It'll be lost in the mists of history for most, but passed down generation to generation amongst a small community of naval chappies who make sure that it is observed. I was involved with the UK forces (RAF specifically) for quite a few years and some of my dearest memories are of the reasons behind traditions and rules. Reading Queens Regs or chatting to a Discip NCO can brighten up a rainy duty afternoon and leave you with a fund of stories for the future ;-)The section makes sombre reading but you can't help to wonder at some of it.... If you really want to find out, why not go down to the Naval Dockyard at Portsmouth and ask one of the old salts who does tours of the ships. They are all ex-Navy and have a fund of wonderful stories. I went round Victory once and in about 15 minutes had learned the history of at least 10 well known phrases or sayings (square meal, rubbing salt in the wound, etc. etc) as well as having some naval traditions explained. Cheers,

Agreed 100%, no different here in our Navy. For now, my answer would be "Because the Queen *wishes* it to be so..." (and apparently she does *not* wish you to have the clap, either....) Past all of that, there's good stuff to be had in the book. The actual printed version is a good reference. I've got another gem, from EBay: "A Trawler Captains Medical Reference". It's circa 1926, and is the book taken aboard by the old North Sea trawlers. All I can say is.... you didn't want to get hurt out there. Instructions for field amputation aboard a trawler... well, I guess at least they had lots of sharp knives. Hiden in all of it are some real tidbits though.
