![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Oriskany Accident I’ve just spent several minutes reading both the article and- more importantly- the comments that followed it. What I took away from the comments after the article: - The diver WAS diving on CCR. He & buddy appeared to be very much up to speed. - Charter boat/ crew did a heroic job given the circumstances. - The USCG does NOT have ANY helicopters available to rescue the general public on call in the area. Even at midday on a weekend when one might expect the public to be most active & potentially in need of rescue. - The attitude expressed by one apparantly active duty Coastie- essentially “He got what he deserved”- is disheartening in the extreme. I truly hope it is not an attitude generally held in that service. Ken

| Waiting... ![]() ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Re: Oriskany Accident Guys, just hold back for a little bit, until we get some more facts... The news article didn't state much detail, and the comments after the fact, are exactly that, just comments. That news site is an open forum for comments, I could get on there right now, and post as "costguardrescuechopperpilot69", and have my say. Anyone can, and it appears they already have. Just because they have said they are xxxxxx, doesn't make them so. A few of the comments posted to that news article are a bit way outta left field. Heather, thanks for the update from someone who was there, I hope it hasn't affected you too much, and we look forward to hearing any updates you can provide. I must admit, my first thoughts when reading that it was a pair of breather divers on the O, was "I hope it wasn't Brian and Heather". To everyone else, lets wait until we get some more facts before pointing fingers. In the meantime, condolences to the family and friends of the diver involved. Being an Optima diver, He was one of a fairly small and close community. I'm sure he was known to some on the board, my heart goes out to all of you. It's never pleasant losing a friend. Thanks, Dave

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Oriskany Accident <snip> All, ...it sounds like the USCG was very slow in responding. Even if this is not their primary mandate, who would or should be better equiped to respond to a life threatening situation like this? Maybe they were busy with other emergencies, who knows, but sending a boat and not a helo to an emergency 25 miles out, does not instill a lot of confidence for me. <snip> For the record: The US Coast Guard does NOT have an SAR Helo unit in Pensacola. Their standard procedure is to respond with a boat as it's what they have available. I've heard that there is an SAR training unit in Mobile, but I don't know for certain. The point I'm trying to make is it's kind of silly for people to scream "Where was the chopper?!?!" Folks, if you get hurt on the Oriskany there is no chopper coming--not from Pensacola anyway. Further you are likely going to be treated at Baptist Hospital here in Pensacola. If that means a chamber ride, be advised that they have monoplace chambers. Not that a monoplace is any less effective in it's treatment; it's not. But it's probably less comfortable than a multiplace. Brian
