Andrea Doria DCS incident

who has the scoop? I learned from a colleague who is a local chamber tech that a diver is on his way in to be treated from a potential incident on Doria trip...I have no specific knowledge of the incident or of who was specifically involved, but obviously we here in Rhode Island are concerned for everyone's safety, and hope that this didn't involve anyone from RBW...let's hope it wasnt anyone from the forum that was recently out there. Looking forward to sharing some info, and hope that no one is injured.

Re: Andrea Doria DCS incident

I was a member of Dave Sutton's RBW trip out to the Andrea Doria, July 24-26. It was a memorable trip in many ways. First, the weather and sea state were perfect. Flat calm and no current. Dave's boat, a 42' Grand Banks is very comfortable to live on, and well prepared for diving.

We were on the wreck July 25 and 26. All divers did 3 dives, and we returned to port the afternoon of the 26th.

Early on the morning of the 27th, we motored out to the wreck of the U-853. We enjoyed splendid surface conditions there, however viz was only about 5' on the wreck.

Late in the afternoon of the 27th, one of the divers reported some mild DCS symptoms and was taken by Dave to the local chamber for evaluation. I do not have an update yet on whether this was a DCS incident or something else. I'm sure since the word instantly leaked out, Dave or the diver involved will respond.

In the meantime, the usual speculation is pointless and unimportant. Divers get bent sometimes. Even when they do nothing "wrong". DCS is a sometimes unavoidable sports injury we all may have to deal with. I am quite sure this one will prove to be only a minor blemish on an othetrwise fantastic trip.

Best Regards, Peter Piemonte

Re: Andrea Doria DCS incident

Thank you for the information. I have many friends going out to the Doria this week and I was concerned for them or any diver that would have a problem. (My 2 Doria trips last week were both blown out!) I'm so jealous of your trip.

But we DID dive the U-boat and viz was as poor as usual. Really cool dive though!

Thanks again

Re: Andrea Doria DCS incident

I wake up after a picture-perfect trip and find this?

Mike writes "Who has the scoop?" I do, and you have my cellphone number. Use it please to avoid stirring up a tempest in a teapot?

Here's the bottom line:

One of our guys, who had blown out his elbow in a ski accident many years ago (with 4 surgeries to correct the damage), complained to me after we got back from diving the U-853 yesterday that hs elbow hurt. Duh! Every muscle in my body hurts too.... we've been offshore for nearly a week. But since we were sitting around the dock congratulating ourselves in the *perfect* trip we had just had, and since the chamber is 20 minutes away and run by my compressor mechanic, we ran him up the road to the chamber where we tossed him down to 60 feet and found: His elbow still hurts. No DCS, just a bruise.

Bottom line: He has a bad elbow anyhow, bumped it someplace hauling tanks, and we did the right thing by getting him checked.

Back to drooling over our Doria haul now:

First shot is Andre' Fortin and yours truly with Andre's first class plate. Good grab! I don't think that china has come up lately, and this was a fabulous find for Andre'. I'm not sure who was happier, he or me! Both of us seem to be smiling!

Second shot is EXPLORER at anchor over the Doria at sundown, just before dinner offshore, taken by Pete Pimonte and myself from the Zodiac. Pete and I were off running around looking to see if we could get closer to some sharks that we had sighted a few hundred meters away from EXPLORER. Notice the rough seas....

We had Leatherback Turtles at the swim platform, Porpoises (one a mother with her calf) swimming at the side of the boat, sharks, Mola-Mola, Tuna, and every other sort of ocean wonder at out doorstep. Seas were about 12 inches, and the weather was perfect. This is the best trip we've ever had. I'm sure a full trip report will be posted later.

Back to sleep for yours truly, been a long week. We spilt no blood, lost no gear, the ocean was happy, all went diving and got fed more than we could eat. Formal dinner in the wardroom anchored over the wreck at sundown was magic. Life is good!!

Re: Andrea Doria DCS incident

First, my public apologies to Dave for potentially stirring up the rumor mill on the trip. It was of course my initial worry and hope that it was not anyone from that trip, and am relieved that it turned out to be nothing. All too often the suspected incidents out there turn out much more grim.

Regarding a previous comment that 'suspected DCS is a part of deep diving', well, it doesnt have to be, and it shouldnt be. It is indeed an assumed and accepted risk by us all, but we can always work towards saf(er) methods and technology.
