![]() | Just a translated summary: He surfaced calling for help. Wife and friends did see him by a boat. Quickly came rescue teams and friends (the latter swimming). Any effort was useless: the diver was cianotic and swallen, dilated thorax, he was spitting caustic cocktail. Also the neck was swallen and he was diving solo. A friend say that probably he modified the rig. His friends wrote that newspaper report is substantially correct. Up to know there are only the informations below coming from friends who rescued them. I'll try to quickly translate their small report: "Three hours later at the police station we opened the reb. The canister was full and purple. Diluent bottles were empty and there were 60/70 bar of oxygen. We switched on his vitek computer running again his dreadful profile: after 13 minutes he was at 100 meters, after a while he reached 109 meters and in about 1'30" he surfaced. He had a 10/70 tmx and a 80% nitrox bailout tanks full. Probably he had not the chance to use them. We didn't extract the cartridge. We only saw from the top that it was flooded and purple but consider that he remained 40 minutes without the mouthpiece. His wife and all his friends are shocked, she witnessed all the tragedy" Roberto was a well known diver in Italy, he was Instructor Trainer TDI Instructor Trainer SDI Instructor Trainer IATA Instructor Trainer PSAI Course Director NAUI Course Director NAUI TEC CCR - SCR - O/C Workshop Director NAUI NAUI Italia Representative I hope new details on the accident will be available in the next weeks and that it could be useful to understand the accident dynamics. No matter how it goes, Roberto will never be here with us ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Roberto Delaide - fatality I'm sorry to see another good man make his departure.... Noting his neck was swollen and he was spitting caustic cocktail, I would like to know if the swelling was caused by the cocktail - and blocking his airway. That sort of thing is a well known possibility with insect stings; can it happen with sodalime too? If so it is a less-obvious way in which caustic cocktail might kill, beyond the obvious possibility that one spits out the mouthpiece. Is this a recognised danger? Is it a real one? (I can testify that dilute sodalime certainly provokes the gagging reflex). Once again, sorry to see we lost another one. |

Thanks Fabio That sorb lacks naoh so it will be less reactive (slower chemical reaction) than conventional sodalime.. I don't think it would function that well at depth.. reading through the various literature, the one point that keeps coming up is taht it was designed for LOW FLOW anesthesia..

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Roberto Delaide - fatality My condolances to friends and family - very sad news. Looking the information reported here: Spitting caustic cocktail, dilated thorax, swollen neck, cyanosed, rapid ascent from 100m+ This sounds like severe pulmonary barotrauma of ascent with ruptured lung and air tracking into neck from mediastinum. Potentially inhalation of caustic solution could cause either severe swelling of the larynx, or laryngospasm - this is where the larynx reflexly closes tightly. A rapid ascent whilst unable to inhale/exhale would then cause the barotrauma. It shows how dangerous a caustic cocktail can be!
