Oxygen With Stainless Steel ???

so far i was under the impression that 100% oxygen doesnt go together with stainless steel.

recently i witnessed the installation of stainlesss steel fittings and piping for the oxygen supply to a chamber.

the technician had the opinion that this was ok.

just to clarify, if anybody out there can so: has there anything changed in regard of o2 together with stainless and if so why?

or - if not, why is it not ok to combine o2 with stainless?

thanks in advance for info reply.

Re: Oxygen With Stainless Steel ???

Stainless is what all the insides and piping are in a Haskel set up for O/2. I'll look around, to see if there is any data, but it would be my choice to use for everything handling O/2.

Yep, oxygen and aluminium are bad in the right (or should that be wrong) circumstances. There have been fires in big oxygen installations (like hospitals and industrial facilities) where aluminium fragments have burnt. Aluminium fragments travelling down a gas line and hitting, say, a sharp bend, or a valve do have a big potential to go kaboom.

Re: Oxygen With Stainless Steel ???

Hi

I have heard from more than one source that Titanium also can not be recommended for high pressure/o2 rich environment. Can anyone confirm this?

Re: Oxygen With Stainless Steel ???

You have made my day....

What a put down on a Ali stage next time I get some ninja black DIR wannabe being rude about my steel bailouts:

"Of course companies like Linde specifically list Aluminium as incompatible with high pressure Oxygen," look concerned "You did know that didn't you?"

Titanium + HP O2 = bad, very bad.

Titanium burns nicely, even at 1 ATA in air.

When I was much younger, and more ignorant I let fine Ti chips accumulate in the tray of a small lathe I was operating.

A hot chip hit this "fuzz stick" and bingo no eyebrows.

First choice if money is no object is Monel / Cupernickel / Alloy 400

Next would be brass

Close third is Stainless Steel.
