I had the pleasure of training the technicians at the acoustic research laboratory in Singapore a little while back. During training it was discussed to come up with a devise that would allow me to communicate from dry land with a group of students without the aid of full face masks or single comms like the buddy phones.

They took on the challenge of producing a unit that would allow clear voice projection during confined water sessions, in addition during design stages they also added a simple jack function to allow me to plug in an I-POD and had the hydrophone attached to a 30m long cable so we can hang it in our habitat or deco station a play you favorite tunes while doing our long deco.

The unit has variable volume and tone, it is run on a sealed lead acid battery for portability and has a mains supply for recharge, it also has a talk back feature for basic sound to allow communication back from the divers by means of tapping the speaker making life little easy for support teams and just to confirm everyone is OK.

I finally got to play with it at the ADEX dive show held over the last few days in Singapore and brought it back to our facility to test it in our 3m deep pool and it works clear as day.

So well done ARL for making this for us, I think it will be an invaluable training aid to our facility and will help the 7 hrs of deco likely on our up and coming cave expedition a fun disco habitat experience.
