the best primary reel...

Hi all,

wich one is your favorite one?

I have tried some cheap stuffs...with some very funny results
I have tried the dive system reel...not bad but not completly what I want.

I am using the pocket ratchet reel from Custom divers as a back-up reel, and I love it, so I was considering the Primary 125m ratchet reel from them, or kent tooling one....

So guys, wich one is the best following your experience.

Regards

Johnny

Re: the best primary reel...

I have used a custom divers ratchet reel (125m) and own a kent tooling ratchet reel (50m). For me the Kent Tooling one is the better of the two. I also have two Kent Tooling 125m friction reels and they are good but I do prefer the ratchet reel.

Re: the best primary reel...

Hi,

Custom diver 125 & 50m ratchet reels for me - had them for a decade with absolutely no issues.

Cheers.

Re: the best primary reel...

I have tried all sorts of reels and I can definitely say the Kent tooling ratchet reels are superb, I have thrown all the others away now and have 2 of the Kent tooling reels.

Depends what your using it for.

For line laying - Halcyon Pathfinder; for DSMB - Custom Divers 125m ratchet reel.

Dive safe,

Gary

Re: the best primary reel...

I had the custom divers 125m Ratchet reel. I hated it because it was notchey and jamed.

My M8 Andyp loved it so when his jamed and he lost it () I swaped him my one for a Suunto Vyper.

That was in 2003 and they had just been launched so they may hae improved. Andyp stoped diving in 2005 and has just started again. His ratchet system is buggered so at best you can say he did a couple hundred dives on it before it failed.

I found for laying line the Halcyon pathfinder is the best thing i have used so far. The side handle and jam proof design is superb.

A a SMB reel the Kent Tooling ratchet reel is great to use and bulitproof in design but at 2kg mighty heavy. The weight is the only bad thing about it.
I helped John and his dad design it and I was thrilled with the end result.

For the weight concious i use a modified £39 beever reel which is both excelent to use and ceep enough to throw away.

Re: the best primary reel...

I really like Halcyon reels (or any of the copies like a Salvo).
It's very easy to use the reel and light in the same hand simultaneously, and the reel can be temporarily locked by applying thumb pressure, easy to use with dry gloves, rarely any problems like jams or tangles. If I'm not using one of those reels, I use basic no-frills delrin spools.
