![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: we need your help for the perfect light 1. with a lens for this LED it will be impossible to get a small beam I managed a reasonably small beam, but as you say it was still much bigger than normal. Then again, I'm hoping for floodlighting not spot from this. They are rated 700-800 lumen so that's fairly normal for LED isn't it? 2. the efficiency of lenses is many more badly than with reflectors 3. the efficiency of this LED cluster is really bad If you use one Ostar with 22W and a good reflector, i think the result will be the same brithness, which is possible with this "monster" Anyhow, they're cheap so that's one tick in the box for me. ![]() When I last looked the Ostar wasn't freely available. The reviews did look fantastic though! Can I ask where you get them from please? I'd like one to play with! ![]()

![]() ![]() | Re: we need your help for the perfect light AARRGGHH, Colin, i can't sleep anymore because of you. No, seriously. If that manufacturer bring on the market such a light, he will sell many. The salvo design is great but the led is a 6° focused. I like focusable lights so it's a big point for your manufacturer. The new ostar led is equal to a 18 watt hid. So if that light can explode a 21 watt hid, it will be a small revolution. Now the most important will be the price.I don't want to sell my house to buy that light. So wait and see. Am very impatient.(but you already noticed that ) |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: we need your help for the perfect light I would like in my perfect light: 1, output of around the same as the HID200 metalsub or brighter 2, LED bulbs - durability and low battery drain 3, build quality similar to solus - indestructable 4, small head like solus, umbilical design 5, power on/off on head - proximity switch like solus 6, long burn time 3-4 hours minimum 7, interchangeable battery packs like metalsub. 8, long, thin design of battery pack, like metalsub - allows for easy mounting on unit, unlike solus - the bigger battery is about the same diameter as a 5L cylinder!!! 9, no memory effect - Li - ion battery cells. 10, depth rated to 200m or more like solus. basically, the best features from metalsub and solus combined ![]()

A reflector would work but the beam would be horrendous and the efficiency would really drop. 2. the efficiency of lenses is many more badly than with reflectors Generally a properly designed lens system would be much more efficient than a properly designed reflector.3. the efficiency of this LED cluster is really bad Agreed. At the rated output (which is only ever likely to be achieved in a lab with the LED stuck to a chiller plate) this LED produces a whopping 34 lumens per watt. The LED industry passed that milestone about 4 years ago. |

This is only right, because it exist still today nothing in good reflectors for LED.But this is only a question of time ![]() ![]() Michael mb-sub.com: Home Last edited by mbsub : 2nd April 2008 at 16:39. |

The LED industry passed that milestone about 4 years ago. True, but Ostar aside, the only other solution is a bank of better performing LEDs. More expense, more engineering. I am looking at drop-in replacement rather than new item, so having a small LED cluster is important. 800 lumen is still ~=65w halogen I think? So appropriate when looking to replace the small 20w halogen used in for example my DiveRite umbilical with its pathetic 2.5Ah SLA battery. That's a quick gain in brightness for limited outlay. For the normal sized halogen, maybe a drop-in Ostar module, or small cluster of crees might be best. Most cannisters I've seen have got room for well-designed drivers to sit between battery and lighthead. There are lots of old halogen umbilicals out there which could be given a new lease of life quite simply and quite cheaply. Maybe a kit? I know this is a bit of a thread hijack and you're looking to make something new and shiny, but don't forget there is a large market out there of divers who won't spend £500+ on a dive torch but would spend quite a bit to upgrade what they already have.
