Re: Using AL 80's for Bailout

My 2 1/2 cents worth.

I don't change my weighting for different tanks. I started with 1 AL40, then went to 1 AL80 & 1 AL40 and didn't change a thing. Diving with 2 deco tanks is great - gives an armrest for both arms

I always dive with 2lb extra just for my own sanity.

80 is 21/35 and the 40 is 80%

Remember, I don't know what I'm doing

Re: Using AL 80's for Bailout

Hi Richie:

Sounds like you got some good advice here.
On my deep dives I carry 1 80, 1 63 and 1 40 all alum. Obviously it makes sense to use the larger tanks for your deep gas bailout and 02 in the 40. 40 c.u. at 20' should last a good long time.

I don't have much trouble with the tanks once in the water and don't tend to notice much difference. On my real deep dives 350+ I carry 2 80s and a 40 or two. Once you get use to it its not too bad.

I would consider trying an alum 63 and a 40 or 63 and an 80. Most 63s are pretty comfortable, give you a good amound of gas and are less bouyant when empty than an 80.

Also you could use a ankle weight or two on the neck of the tank to add some neg.

Like most other posters said, I don't really add much extra weight to compensate for the tanks. If empty I clip them to the line or send them up with a bag or marker. In an emergency I would just drop the tank and hope to retreive it later. Fact is, abscent a complete flood, most of the time you can get back on your loop so you probably would not need to drain two alum 80s (at the depths you mentioned) and deal with this problem.

Dave

Re: Using AL 80's for Bailout

Sorry, but you assume incorrectly. My comments were aimed at the subject and the person asking the question. Unless directly approached I do not contradict someone elses post.

When it comes to this style of diving the whole field is made up of openion and very little fact supported documentation.

FYI most of my dives are to 300+ foot and the water is always about 54 F, but I live in the mid west and that's what we have to deal with.

Bottom line is that I know what I'm willing to accept as personal responsibility, and in my mind this means that I think about my buddy first, then the dive.

I dive and offer advise / information on this forum, that's it!

dont worry fella, me and my buds have been full circle on bailout. We have a very clear understanding of what really works and what dont!!.

forget your 160-200ft dives, how many tins do you need for bailout on a 330-380ft dive for a 25min BT diving in cold dark UK waters??

But this thread aint about my bailout stratergies, we have a very clear and precise system of what can and cant be coverd for the diving we do. This has come from experiance and realistic practases. Dont mean to piss on your chips m8, but i accept the calculated risk of what will cause me to come off the loop (full-flood) rather than walking around with 4 or 5 80's hanging from me just in case i get a full flood at depth. As for CO2 dont even get me started

I had to prove it to people once thatthey where not lift bags. drained then completly re attached my first stage and thre them of the pontoons at the local dive site. trust me they sank all the way down to 50mtrs.

hand to make a dive then to recover them.
well you must have first stages made of led then as i had mine in fresh water with 20 bar and it made me to light , so i had to wedge it under a rock to stop it floating around the quarry for collection at end of the dive
