Can't talk about the DR, but the Solus-2500 has tight beam for signalling up to ~2/3 the distance I would signal with a HID light.

Beyond ~2/3 the distance (i.e. vary depending on ambient light amount), the signal is still recognizable, but the "spot" is bigger with the Solus.

Thanks for that DW. Sounds impressive. Though I'm looking for strictly a handheld to stow as a 4th light for if/when the Salvo 21w ever gives out. Then, I can at least complete the dive as planned without shooting the thumb. The Salvo has been rock solid but I'm looking for something economical, small and powerful with decent duration for that once-in-a-blue-moon failure. I know a lot of new LEDs are planned to be out this year so I'll be in the hunt for something. I'd like to see a comparison between the Tilltec W30 and Dive Rite 500 Lumen light.

Re: LED Primary Light

Thanks for all the replies.

I put the final list down to the TillyTec 1000 and the Solus 2500 and have just ordered the TillyTec. I have to admit I like the ability to interchange between the GreenForce and vise versa. The asking price for the TillyTec was quite a bit less than the Solus too......This may be because I bought it direct from the factory and cut out the middle man.

TillyTec - Green Force | ein einzigartiges Lampensystem

When it arrives I'll put it through it's paces and it'll get a good work out next Month on the Hammerhead Tour in the Gulf of Thailand. I'll let you know how it performs when I've tried it out.

Regards,

Lance

Hi Lancer,

It might also be quite a bit cheaper because they're both very different ends of the market. The SU-2500 produces at least 2.5 times the beam lumens. A better comparison would have been the SH-1250 Handheld.

The old adage of "You get what you pay for"...

Good luck with your purchase, I would love to see a review since I have read a lot of praises for the system lately.

BTW, I can't be more happy with my 2500. Actually, I could be more happy once I have time to fix the Goodman handle...

Hey Deco,

Thanks for the reply.......I am sure the TillyTec is going to do what I want. It'll be interesting to see how it stacks up against Bazz's Solus when we dive together in May.

In the mean time I'll put up a review after I have had time to check it out.

Regards,

Lance

Re: LED Primary Light

I got to try out the new TillyTec LED1000 today and have to say it is impressive. There was not a lot of ambient light due to the foul weather and down in some small coral caves and ledges it was amazing how bright and intense the beam of light is.

Looking forward to trying it out for real next week on some nice deep wrecks on the Hammerhead Tour.

Regards,

Lance

Re: LED Primary Light

I have also been playing with an osram ostar (1000 lumen 6 emitter LED) for my homebuilt lights- so far it appears that it is brighter than my 10W MR11 HID (6deg bulb) but I have not managed a fantastic reflector of yet. As soon as I get home to my machines I have a number of other reflectors that I will be cutting down and trying out, But I have high hopes for the Ostar- not the least of which is that I can quit replacing HID bulbs after I break them hauling them around dry caves. I have not been happy with the multi LED lights- as others have said it is difficult to get a really nice beam with multiple plastic focusing elements, and some light is lost through that type of focusing element. The new multi-emitter LEDs, such as the ostar fix this problem- you only need one reflector, much easier to design around. Ideally, it would be nice to have a drop in replacement cartridge since most of the ostar plastic reflectors are designed around an MR11 size form. (As are Mini-Q 40 aluminum reflector elements, heh heh...)
Another cool part, which I have always wanted, is with the LED emitters, and certain power boards, you can select your brightness- obviously, most of the time you want the max- but when I survey, I always have the light right on my book, and it is blinding- it would be great to be able to drop it down to a useful brightness... hmmm...

Re: LED Primary Light

Hello,
we are the producer of the new PHOTON and LED-CAVE. Both systems needs the same LED-head with one OSTAR - LED (max. 1000 lumen).
In diffence to TillyTec our light systems are all with dimming, discharge protection and with Lithium-Manganese-accumulators with 2 years warranty time.
I think specially for members of RW is our LED-CAVE. A brochure is attached.
