The Mother of All Reg Reviews - Scuba Diving Magazine

Gordon wrote a reply to that test, stating that it was a different reg they were using to the one in the tests, and it was the first stage, not the second stage that failed.

I don't remember where I read it, and couldn't be bothered looking for it at the moment, but its out there.

Having said that, the first thing I did when I bought my unit was to follow the directions from the library here on Rebreather World to replace the paragon with an Oceanic Omega.

Have you had problems with the mares reg ?
Dean
I might just have had a duff one but the exhaust valve on mine keeps ending up getting pushed up into casing. I don't know if there's maybe a pressure differential or what but it's happened a lot. A few times I've tried to see how it breathed at depth only to get a gobful of water and a very wet breathe, I'm losing faith in it for dealing with a sudden bailout and considering a Golem. It's hard to clear it underwater because the baffle that goes over the exhaust is fixed in place with a steel pin rather than the kind most regs have that just pull off. It's too small to get a gloved finger into either.

The other downside is that it is absolutely massive. You become very aware of it if you have to jump in off a high boat, especially when it cracks you on the nose or front teeth After doing it a couple of times, you won't forget to keep hold...

I took the regulator to dive lab & showed it to them. It sure looked like the reg they tested to them. You cannot make a crappy 2nd stage good by hooking it up to a good apex 1st stage, Apex are great regs but they are not magic. The Paragon breaths like a pig, is temperamental & leaks water like a sieve if breathed hard. Other than that it is a fine reg.

Re: Anyone sell me a used working paragon ?

The 1st stage im using is a DS4.. its ok but .. it has no cold kit it doesnt like hard work and the ports are not straight up .
I will change them when ive sorted out the Paragon problem ..

Which mares reg are you using Stuart ?
The Ray hoses and reg fit straight onto the sports kiss (thanks Dave ) but gob piece is upside down .
I have Ray hoses and mouthpiece going spare...could there be a swap here ?

I'll check when I get home but I'm pretty sure the DSV is exhale right, inhale left as the CK. If you're interested in a swap then let me know.

Cheers,

Stuart

Flapper Spiders are reversable so they can be used either flow direction. Pull 'em and flip 'em.

I have two "Paragons of Unreliability" available, all you need to do is to dive in the marina behind EXPLORER to find the pair that I tossed over the side last year. The bubbles they released as they sank to the muck were the last bubbles the stupid things ever released, the freeflowing pigs. Damned worthless Chinese-Junk crap POS rotten-to-the-core black-hearted water AND gas leaking toys. (I feel better now....).

Mares replacements have been fine. Little large in the air but no sweat in the water.

Re: Anyone sell me a used working paragon ?

Second the comments on the Paragon - a terrible reg if I ever breathed one! Use anything but this....I'd go as far as to call it a dangerous addition to the KISS, or indeed any CCR...

I have checked and it does indeed flow in the same direction as the KISS.

Now that's a "doh!" moment. I tried swapping the right and left cage assembly to reverse the flow, but they are sized differently so won't fit. I never thought of just turning them over...

And say what you mean about the Paragon, a lot of people may not have understood your subtlety

Cheers,

Stuart

They may be shite, but I have two absolutely brand spanky new, utterly untouched by human hand examples in the loft. Should anyone want one, a PM will suffice.
