hi
its not a true gearbox(mechanical)
the 4 speeds come about by 12 volt > 24 volt
varying the brush angle on the comm
hope this helps

Re: aquqzepp spares

and the LT 30 is 12 volt only. The "high" speed is very inefficient. If you want to mod your zepp to improve speed / range, best to use a PCM controller and keep the brushes in the optimum position.

i run my zepp from 48v. this is fed into a pcm (pulse width control modulator) basically a circuit board you can buy. normally you use a pot to control the output voltage setting the speed. The zepp standard speed change is a 12/24v switch and also a gear that moves the magnets in the motor. lower speed position is the most efficient, faster is less efficient. Best to fix the magnets into the position that gives the lowest current draw and use modern electronics to vary the speed.

Your problem with the LT 30 is that you have 2 batteries of dissimilr size connected in parallel, what you need is 24v (or more) from batteries in series, but they need to be of the same size. Also, the LT30 doesn't have any turn switches that can be used to vary the speed.

Your quickest win would be to get new batteries, work out what size you can get into the body (without going over weight) connect them together to give you 2 sets of 12v, the connect these blocks in series to give you 24v. You will see a significant speed increase, but a drop in range.

you could achieve something similar using nimh batteries, but aim for something more moderate, say 18V
