![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Russian Uber DPV: Protei-5 for sale Hi Guys: Just thought I'd give an update on the Protei-5 I am working on to make usable. Have bought two 12 volt Enersys 35 aH SLA batteries and will wire them parallel, so get up to 70 aH @ 12 volts. Using Anderson powerpoles, like Rodney uses on his Submerge scooters, I have connected the two batteries, and can quick disconnect and charge seperately. The rest of the original wiring has been utilized, it is 4 gauge, the soviets were serious! If you have a similiar DPV buy the recessed terminal batteries, so they can fit thru the 8.125" diameter hatches. The original trays are 16" x 7 3/4" x 5 1/2", so I had to cut some wood to slide on the side and the top of the batteries so they wouldn't bounce around, and also brackets on front and back to hold them fast in the battery trays. I sanded and finished the plywood gloss black to match the interior. There is room inside for four of these batteries, but at 24 lbs. each, I know it'll be too negative. Next I'll trim it using lead weight, and can secure those with cable ties in the battery tray as well. That will happen as I also leak test the machine in a tank, then pool test. Last test will be in Dutch Springs (a quarry) before splashing in the Northest Atlantic off of New Jersey. I have attempted to upload an image of the Protei-5, this pic does not show the shoulder clips, or the "handlebar" I have yet to have welded out of stainless steel. Winter is a great time for this project! |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Russian Uber DPV: Protei-5 for sale Steve: Thanks, but this has my hands full as it is. I have uploaded a couple more images, one showing how tight the fit is with the two batteries, that's before I cut and fit the wood shims and brackets. The other shows the aft with the thick power cable fit thru to the hull. Ran it again today at full power, runs with high power. Maybe this weekend I'll have a chance to "trim" it and leak test. -Dan |

Its generally better footage if you're screaming "banzaiiii" rather than "muuummyyy". "Oh shit, oh shit, oh shiiiiit" is sort of a half way house and open to interpretation.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Russian Uber DPV: Protei-5 for sale Thank you for the idea of putting the video of it on YOU TUBE. I'll bring my Gates housed mini DV and put someone in charge of shooting it. I will be screaming "mommy!!!" for sure, this motor has some torque and speed, and in has two gears, ON and OFF. These hulls are a bear working with, as one has to reach way inside around the batteries to do just about anything. My arm can't even reach all the way back to the aft end! Maybe the Proton made it easier on the mantainence, and had access to the rear hull. The 3" S.S. cap you see in the aft end pic is only to a small compartment sealed that has the motor power terminals for the motor. I envy anyone who has a Gavin/Submerge style body and can just pull the entire hull off with a few clips. Once the batteries are in, you don't want to take them back out since it was so difficult to install. One has to slide them thru the hatch at an angle, while making a turn.....very difficult and maddening. Pre-wire anything you can before batts go in! I included one pic with the starboard hatch off to show the angle of the opening one has to deal with. Measure the batteries diagonal clearance (not on a spec sheet) as they have to make the 8.12" diameter hatch! Best, -Dan |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Russian Uber DPV: Protei-5 for sale Ben: I have connected the batteries in parallel, with quick disconnects (anderson powerpoles) like submerge scooters use, so I can easily charge the batteries in place, and one at a time, as the charger will work faster charging one at a time rather than both. I will get a few new snapshots of the progress. I am doing this just in case someone else aquires one of these and is trying to make it work. I know when I first opened the crate I was scratching my head wondering how and why did I get into this. We all know since we are into this technical sport that it is the challenge of making it happen! Regards, -Dan |
