Re: Where should our Wiki be?

whatever y'all decide, just keep Karl away from it, otherwise it will be a Wiki-rant.

but seriously, isnt that what Rebreather World is now? why make seekers look in multiple places for the data that should be here, in the forums and library. If it aint dead yet, I vote shoot it again.

A Wiki is a place where people, read anybody, can put information but nobody in their right mind go to look at it because you have no idea how accurate it might be...
In another word, kind like some of the Rebreather World threads going on now ?

Re: Where should our Wiki be?

Wiki's are the major player in dumbing down the accuracy of proper information. They become the 'average' of what the contributors know about a subject, whether they really know anything about it at all or just a little bit.

All a wiki is is essentially a disseminator of hearsay.

Cheers,
Jason.

Re: Where should our Wiki be?

As the 'Wisdom of Crowds'
Amazon.com: The Wisdom of Crowds: Books: James SurowieckiAmazon.com: The Wisdom of Crowds: Books: James Surowiecki explains, even gurus are fallible, but crowds are surprisingly smart and, under certain clear conditions, far smarter than the gurus. If a Wiki gets good useage, mistakes should be quickly spotted. The dimensions database is a great example of where it would be useful to have the information in one place: the information is independently verifiable and hard to search for. There are a lot of questions that get asked repeatedly: with time the answers decline in quality and get increasingly testy. A Wiki is designed to refine the answer over time. If it doesn't work it can always be killed later.

I couldn't agree more strongly.

To pinch a bit from wikiality.com (the Portmanteau of wiki and reality)

"The concept of Wikiality derives from the theory of cultural relativity and is grounded on the idea of "truth by consensus" or "popular truth." Taking Wikipedia as a prime example of a site for consensual truth building, we can see how Wikiality works. First, everything on Wikipedia is accepted as true, so we can assume that everything written on Wikipedia is the truth. However, anyone can edit Wikipedia. So theoretically anyone can edit the truth. Thus, if enough people agree with any user's edit, or at least accept the Wikipedia version as true, it becomes the truth. "

So.....
Everything on this website is also the truth.
