Dennis,

If you look at the product lines of OS from Microsoft, that part has already set, CE - ME - NT

I would dare to suggest that your PC is past it's prime and that it is not really suprising that it is going very slow.

Amazingly there are still support articles for Windows ME on Microsoft web site, but you may struggle to get at those as well

If not spending money on your PC is the priortity then 1) try another browser, 2) upgrade to Linux, or 3) whilst browsing.

Seriously though I think it may be a tad unfair to expect support on an ME system from Stuart or others on this board regarding the speed of your system.
Oh well have fun while you decide how much longer you are going to suffer your old PC

If you want to take a packet log download ethereal from www.ethereal.com and I will be happy to look at it for you, so we can define if it is your system or the web server that is being slow.

Cheers,

Jon

I have a computer at work and a computer at home. The one at work functions, the one at home doesn't.

Dave,

Sorry for not reading. As before, if you can be bothered to install and then run ethereal while you get the failure this would really help. If you want some help with this let me know.

Out of curiosity, I have reduced the maximum packet size to 200 bytes on a PC and the Rebreather World site still behaves perfectly for me, this would have revealed several issues at the server end, however your path to the server is not the same as mine.

1) do you have any fancypants FW in place on your home system?
2) are similar forum sites ok from your home PC? Yorkshire-divers for example, perhaps Stuart can point you at one that runs the same software??

cheers,

Jon

Hi Jon,

Thanks for your reply. I have just tried using a dial up modem to access the net and Rebreather World now displays properly. Switch back to my broadband connection and I'm back to the blank pages. I use a firewall under Norton internet security which I have tried disabling and that doesn't make any differance. I can access both Yorkshire -divers and Southwest Mafia forum sites from my home PC.

Does any of this help ?

Re: IE Blank Page Problem..

Dave,

If your PC works when connected via a modem, and not via your DSL then it is blatently a network rather than browser related issue.

A typical cause of this problem is when devices such as your DSL router use a smaller packet size than other devices, this should not be a problem on the Internet as the design of TCP/IP is such that it should be able to enable any two devices to communicate... however as security started to become an issue, people/software/systems started breaking the basic rules that enabled the interworking.

In the initiation of my PC talking with Rebreather World forum web server.. my PC says that it can cope with Segments of 1460, and the RBW server says it can use 1452, so my PC adopts the 1452 size. The test I did with 200 byte maximum packets caused the RBW web server to agree to talk in packets of less that 200bytes.

If your PC is not communicating correctly with your DSL router then this size issue could be the problem you are suffering.

Amusingly www.ibm.com gives a maximum segment size of 1348 to avoid this issue with as many people as possible I bet you can look at their web site with out a problem??

I am suprised that you do not notice it with other web sites. YD acts in the same correct mannor as Rebreather World so you really should get the same effect with that site as well if this is the primary issue.

If you are feeling brave - at your own risk.. you can edit the registry (editing your registry wrongly can render your PC broken) to force your PC to use smaller packets - I would suggest you set the MTU to 1400(decimal) bytes long.

If you add a a key by the name of MTU in the following place and then set its value in decimal to 1400 and reboot... it will either make no apparent difference or it may fix the problem. This will make communications slightly less efficient but not noticably.

to do this you will need to run REGEDIT.EXE

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servi ces\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\(Interfacename)
Key: MTU type DWORD

The alternative is to install a packet logging program and record the communication which is possibly more complex depending on your level of bravery with software.

Good luck.

Jon

Re: IE Blank Page Problem..

I can now view all the posts ! Tried everything Jon suggested to no avail. If I disable Norton internet security completely the posts are viewable. Disabling the firewall on its own does not work. The funny thing is other forum sites work o.k. without disabling the security and Rebreather World worked o.k. with the security active up to four weeks ago.

Thats the beauty of computers they always do exactly the same thing every time and are always 100% predictable.

Dont forget to back out/remove any registry changes you made.

Merry Christmas
