Our compact plate for PRISM head and basket

Hello all,

Still new to Rebreather World, with only 50 hrs on PRISM, think we have a good idea. A buddy an me have designed a compact SS plate to attach the PRISM head and basket assembly. There is no need for adapter plate, bolts right to back plate. Tanks still mount to side, and you can still use to SMI supplied (if you buy it) cowling. If not using cowling, any size tanks still mount with cam straps. I am trying to attach photos-hope it works. Let us know what you think. Any info good or bad appreciated. With the airline gorillas handeling luggage and weight requirements going down, we are trying to keep our unit with us at all times. See to always have something damaged when placed in checked bags. The system will fit in a carry on, minus tanks. Plenty of room for CL hoses and mouthpiece without compressing them.

Re: Our compact plate for PRISM head and basket

Hi James,

I pulled the second post so there won't be two threads with feedback.
Really like what you guys did there.

Been mulling over a similar design that would include the upper tank
mount wrapping around the head to protect it, the wings and probably
most importantly the ring that holds the bucket once the cowling is off.
But don't know if it can be fitted with the cowling, it's already a tight fit.

Anyway, great job and worth a blob. Thanks for the pics.

Re: Our compact plate for PRISM head and basket

Very interesting design. How does the cowling fit? Have you tried it? I know with the design of the cowling, the tanks kind of hold it on as it snaps over the tanks.

With something like that and it looking so simple, you could have one in SS and one in aluminum for travel.

I'm guessing the slots and bolt holes on the bottom are for maybe drysuit bottles brackets.

Very nice indeed.

Re: Our compact plate for PRISM head and basket

Thanks for the look. Yes Dave, bottom of plate milled for bracket. Cowling still fits as it did with the original flat black plate. Tanks holding it on. All we did was place a bungee diagonally across the top of cowling on each corner that holds top of cowling in place, and a small loop at base. works really well, it is already a tight fit, not sure you need any bungee. Haven't had it in the water yet, but will let you how it goes.

I'm very impressed with the simple shape and lean structure. But how do you fasten the harness to the BP? And do the cyls stay put as well as they do with the stock plastic plate? -Andy

Are you going to put onthe strap around thre bottom of the bucket? If you don't you will open yourself up to pin breakages through movement.

I think that's what the slots are for on either side of the pad. (Check 2nd picture)

I figured the slots were for that but it is safer to asked than say I told you so when it gets sent back to get new pins glued in.

Re: Our compact plate for PRISM head and basket

Thanks for the look guys. Sorry I havn't replyed sooner, been busy with work(what a drag).

Andy, We have threaded bolts through the plate and secured with loctite, so they won't back out. For travel we machined some delrin plugs to cover the threads to protect them. We haven't had to travel wih them in luggage yet so i am not sure how well they will be protected, but i am not that worried about it, as the back plate fits under the unit reversed, and all still fits in over head carry on luggage. As for the cyl, when dry the don't slip at all. We placed some innertube over the ss where the tanks will contact to protect metal to metal and slippage.i am not sure how they will act when wet though as we still haven't had the unit in the water, but i will let you know after the trial fly.

Luke, thanks for the look as well. Yes the strap does go through the slots as Stefan stated, good eye Stefan. The bucket is secured just as with the black stock plate. We machined a saddle and placed the original PRISM pad over it for cushion. Took two tries, but works well as is tight.

I'll try to post more pics below. Thanks agian for the input.

Re: Our compact plate for PRISM head and basket

Thanks for the detailed reply. I see the innertube and I'm glad the cyls stay put, but the cowling rests on the cyls for support and my concern is that in the event of a slip n' fall, will the cowling stay put without support from the horizontal plane like the traditional plastic BP has?
