![]() ![]() | New Prism being delivered Hello All, New to this site, very impressed. There is a ton of info in here. Wish I had known about it before deposit placed back in September '05. Going to California to train with Jeffery Bozanic this May. Rebreathers delivery next week per SM. I have many questions about unit and travel. First of which is what pelican case to ship in, need for spare part at traing, to include extra sensors, etc. Do airlines give you much shite over transporting cylinders, etc... Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Saying Goodbye to Bubbles. I hope. James |

| Who loves ya, baby ![]() ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Re: New Prism being delivered Welcome to Rebreather World, James. And congrats on the PRISM. As for travel ... I can fit it in my Miata. ![]() Haven't tried a plane yet, but 'silent running' can fill you in. Regarding tanks, SMI has some info on their website, and if you search the forums for "TSA" or "airlines" you should get plenty of hits.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: New Prism being delivered James, Several rules apply here: (1) TSA rule on cylinders--They have to be able to inspect the inside if they want to do so--Also, the airlines want them de-pressurised for safety reasons--I remove the valves, and put travel caps on the cylinders to protect them--I carry the cylinders in my checked baggage--I have had no problems whatsoever. (2) The size limit is 62 inches total--sum of length plus width plus height--and 50 lbs domestic--70 lbs international--above that you will be charged extra--or they may refuse to carry it. (3) Remember: You probably will not be asked what is in the case if it is not marked. If you are, however, your gear is "sport equipment". It is NOT scuba gear. Some airlines charge extra for that even if it is within weight limits. It is NOT a rebreather. Some parts of the world get suspicious about your posession of military gear! Don't worry. If you tell the agent at check-in that it is sport equipment, and TSA (or the local equivalent) opens it later, they do not call back to the desk, so no one will come looking for you to spank you. (4) Sometimes application of these rules gets extremely "iffy" and arbitrary. Doing it the way I suggest is the correct way to avoid problems (if at all possible). Trust me on this one. It is what I do for a living! (5) As a final note on your question about spares, it is always good to have a set of spare sensors about six months newer than your first set, if funds allow. Just my ppO2's worth. Cheers, and welcome to the "Dark Side"! ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: New Prism being delivered I use a pelican 1660 case, which at 35lbs or so empty is indeed a heavy case. It fits my prism, including the grey wolf tech backplate with cover, like a glove width/lengthwise, and leaves enough room height-wise to pack in clothes, extra foam, or whatever. I like to just put a big-ass piece of foam on top, so if TSA takes it out they can put it in easily without having to repack. With tanks inside it is 76 or so lbs., so I load it full of stuff to 96 lbs or so since I'm paying for it anyways. This does not include the head, I carry that with me in a pelican 1430 case, which fits the head, primary, secondary, and all my computers brilliantly. Continental, as mentioned, has no concerns about rebreathers. The only thing the agent in Hawaii wanted to know was what its like! |
