Sounds to me like this idea should be filed under the heading: Probably will work but not terribly smart. I consider it fairly unlikely that the electronics cap will flood on the prism. However, should it ever do so in the ocean, and should there be a Li - ion battery in there it would short-circuit, rapidly discharge, overheat and possibly even ignite...all not very nice for the continued integrity of your unit and your diving pleasure. Not worth the proverbial 50cent part in my book. Cheers Andrew ![]() Yes, that was my basic concern, as well as the fact that "9v" lithium batteries don't put out exactly 9v. I'll keep it around for the smoke detectors (love that 10 year shelf life) and get a pack of Duracells for the Topaz. Thanks, have a green blob! And one for webslave as well! |

![]() | Re: Lithium 9v battery? One of the aspects of my job has me playing with 9 volt Lithium cells in wireless audio transmitters. These are at times exsposed to salt water, ( damn actors) and both 9 volt and electronics get drenched. I've never seen a Lithium 9 volt go up in smoke. However, it isn't in an O2 rich enviroment, the battery is removed usually within 5 mins although it has gone as long as half an hour, and I've never noticed the 9 volts to be hot. Lithium batts are used in other rebreathers, I have used lithium 9 volts in other dive equipment without problem. |

Hey, fair enough, knock yourself out...you won't see me using them in my rebreather though. Take a look at the MSDS for Li-ion batteries here: linkHere's the bit that gets my attention (especially if it should occur in a 1 atm housing, as is the case on a Prism) : SECTION VI- PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING AND USE Other Precautions: Batteries may explode or cause burns, if disassembled, crushed or exposed to fire or high temperatures. Do not short or install with incorrect polarity. All this is not to mention the nasty gases that would come out of these batteries if they were to rupture. This all leads to interesting discussions about just where the batteries should be ---> not inside the loop is a good start. Cheers |

![]() | Re: Lithium 9v battery? Yep, makes for good reading, but this spec sheet does look like its for rechargable cells and not one use sealed 9 volts that you get from Energizer etc. I take your point about not wanting it in a breathing loop, but my point was in all the times I've had salt water drenched 9 volts I've not had a problem with the cells doing anything nasty. Personaly I would not have a problem with the Medical Grade Lithium 9 volts sold by Energizer (L522) mixing with salt or fresh water. |

I'm taking one with me to the Caymans next week, and I'll take it down 80 feet or so in a vacuum sealed package and then cut the sucker open. I'll report back on the results. ![]() |
