Re: WW2 Destroyer Aarron Ward

From memory the wrecks, and their depths, of Guadalcanal and Tulaghi are :

USS John Penn 55 m
USS Atlanta 130 m
Hirokawa Maru 60 m
Kinugawa Maru 30 m
Azumasan Maru 70 m
USS Aaron Ward 70 m
USS Kanawha 60 m
HMNZS Moa 40 m

HMAS Canberra about 700m I think.

Jeff 'Scuttle' is the man to ask about that part of the world.

Thanks, Steve. Yes, the Atlanta is the deep one, I thought so.

Scuttle, are all the wrecks mentioned by Steve accesable from Dive Tulagi?

Re: WW2 Destroyer Aarron Ward

Yes Tulagi Dive do all the wrecks Steve mentioned & more--- bar the Canberra.
Travel is about 1-1-5 hrs between the islands of Guadalcanal & Tulagi & the conditions have to be fairly good for at least 6hrs if based at Tulagi to do the Honiara wrecks. Strong currents run at times too. If you make it know you want to dive them, Neil is only too happy to try.

Mna that's probably the most historical wrecks of WWII behind the USS ARIZONA, it was the first shots fired, with the first enemy sinking, can't wait to visit.
Um - point of order, "first shots fired"? - there had been a bit of stuff going on elsewhere before that, but I know what you mean

A group of us are heading out that way in Aug/Sep 07 diving with Tulagi - looks like it's gonna be a good trip!

Thanks for the info Jeff. Have you been on the Atlanta? What kind of shape is she in?

Re: WW2 Destroyer Aarron Ward

Na, to deep for this old fella. Neil did a solo O/C dive on it last year, said it was on its side & the shot unfortunately was on the keel side so didn't get much time to have a good look before it was time to ascend.

Re: WW2 Destroyer Aarron Ward

I have dived the Atlanta, did so in in October 2004 with Pennny Glover.

She is an awesome wreck laying twisted onto her back in places, she suffered a huge pummeling prior to being scuttled.

Cheers,

Dave Cooper.
