Sigma 15mm F2,8 for UW photography?

I am in the look for a wide angle lens that I can later also use UW. I do not have a housing yet, but will buy it hopefully soon.

My camera is Canon EOS350D.

Any comment about that Sigma fishey?

The Sigma 15mm is an OK lens for film cameras. With Digital and crop factor it will not give you 180 degrees field of view.

As canon does not have any Fisheye lens for smaller sensors I would look at the new Tokina 10-17 fisheye zoom.
It will give you 180-100 degrees which is optimal for UW.

See:
Tokina 10-17/3.5-4.5 DX [digital!]
New Tokina Lenses

Just check that you can get the ports and zoomrings from your underwater housing manufacturer. And check also Wetpixel.com :: Underwater Photography and Videography someone is about to test it UW.

That Tokina seems interesting. One reason for the Sigma 15mm was that suitability with 35mm film also. I guess in the future the digital SLRs will also have full size panel.

There is no ports for that Tokina yet. Probably they are coming but the lens is so new.

I have one Sigma DGFisheye (15mm 1:2.8) that I use in my Canon 20D.
I'm pretty happy with it, but you have to deal with vignetting in most photos.

Re: Sigma 15mm F2,8 for UW photography?

The 15MM EX DG will give you 180 on a digital sensor, the older and recently discontinued 15MM EX you will end up with about 110 degrees on your cannon. I just bought one of these to use for doing UW panoramas. Since the distorted corners will be cut off by the smaller sensor you end up with a very wide angle lens and images that are sharp corner to corner.

Bottom line it depends on what you intend to do with it. If you need the width or 180 look at the DG version or there might be a port for the Tokina by the time you pull the trigger on a housing.

Re: Sigma 15mm F2,8 for UW photography?

Thanks everyone for the input! This is a great forum indeed!

I think I will put an order for the lens. Should it not work with 35mm film and reduced panel digital SLRs too?
