Web pics and copyright?

Anyone else have problems with people copying images off your web site (i.e. flickr) and using the images on their own site?

I just came across one of my pics of a turtle on the front page of http://mandarin-divers.com/index.php...tpage&Itemid=1

No permission was sought and it isnt even attributed.

The original is at http://www.flickr.com/photos/amell/4406498/

I have emailed this web site to complain. How do you photographers show your pics on the web without them getting ripped off by other people?

This is not the first time it has happened to me, and I'm really annoyed

Re: Web pics and copyright?

It has happened to me also.

The best way to insure that that doesn't happen is to water mark the imges, but that is obnoxious to look at.

You could contact the FBI, but, it probably won't get any attention unless you can show finanical loss (say, your a professional photographer and they stold pictures you licence as stock).

The other option is to file a law suit against them (by yourself, not sure if that is possible). They can ignore it, but things get uglier for them if they are in the US.

Re: Web pics and copyright?

send them a bill, then keep sending it the hefty price should have them change the pic. It happens all the time , I did have a request for the right to use my avatar pic by some Canadian advertising agency. I simple said No and they said thanks , If you see it anywhere let me know!

Do you really care that they are using it to promote there business to make money ?

send them a bill !!!

No. I dont really care, but its the principle here. The pic has a license attached in flickr... and that license was ignored.

Re: Web pics and copyright?

I put a copyright notice in all the pictures on my site. Yes it can be really annoying to look at, but it's all that you can do in reality.
On the front page I inform about the copyright laws, but if people don't care, then it does no good.

Sucks, doesn't it.
Happened to me too, of all people some copyright/patent sheister wanting to sell his Rebreather domain.
F***ing *****.

And that picture had the copyright notice on it!
Pita to enforce, costs plenty of $$$.

Is someone from that Mandarin outfit here on the board?
If so send'em a PM ... if they don't pull the pic we oughta boot them.

Re: Web pics and copyright?

Nice pictures by the way.

Your copywrite notice/watermark is quite small and on an edge (as mine is) because I like having nice pictures to show. The realitiy is that that is a mistake on a public site if you have good/valualbe pictures (as you do - and I hope I do). Really, you should put a much begger more obnoxious water mark right in the center, maybe something transparent and empossed.

That should stop people from blatantly stealing the image anyway.

Re: Web pics and copyright?

I agree, send them a bill, but this may also entitle them to continue to use the image. If that doesn't work complain to PADI (don't laugh)- they enforce standards on instructors and dive facilities to protect the PADI copyrights. They should force one of their members to observe your copyright.

Another technique to mark your images is to include your copyright in the EXIF information of the jpg. There are also non-visible digital watermarks you can apply.

Re: Web pics and copyright?

Its a hong kong site, it sure doesent suprise me. I've dove all over the world, and if its one thing Ive learned, its the chinese/koreans/japanese as a majority (although im not saying everyone) disregard or have no concern at all for stealing/copying someone else's hard work. Ever stroll through thailand? Singapore? Philipines? People walking around all day selling pirated movies, music, computers, etc. The SPA says over 90% of illegal copying happens in Asia. Know what else pisses me off? They absolutely have no clue about sustainablility of sealife as well as blatent plagirism. They think both are perfectly acceptable. I tried arguing with a guy from china about why he wanted to kill the pufferfish. He kept sticking his arm out by his groing saying "make you strong". I told him the answer to that is viagra. Ive watched the boats from Japan come into my backyard (pacific ocean) and illegaly fish for salmon in the middle of the night. Ive read the japanese whale fishing articles about how they are only killing the whales for "scientific research". yeah, right. Ive watched the fishing boats from Japan/China come into Palau while i was there and fish illegaly. (btw, did you know that when the Palau Navy goes out to patrol they find illegal fishing 100% of the time? 100%. EVERY SINGLE TIME! And they are NOT Palaun fishing boats. While in Palau last month, I talked to a diver that had her picture stolen from her website and used on the cover of a (hard copy) chinese dive magazine. They take everything we make and copy it, then resell it for a cheaper price using inferior components. This probably sounds like some asian bashing, and maybe it is in some sort, but mostly I am bashing unfound myths that alot of them still believe in that are complete crap, yet keep decimating our fish stocks. (shark fin soup anyone?) Unfortunatley, those myths are tied to a specific race, so like the saying goes, if the shoe fits....
