questions

Hey, do you guys have a lanyard or tether from you to your larger videocam? If so, what manner?

More importantly, I know the Phenom housing I am getting has a lens guard, but what do you guys do who shoot macro when it comes to trying to hold the videocam steady while doing macro work?

Lastly, how close does your lens get when shooting macro.....I am paranoid about bumping the from acrylic lens against coral and scratching it.....

Coil, with QD buckles. Two, one to each chest D-ring.
(I use an Ikelite tubular acrylic housing for my GL-2)

Dave,

I use a stainless bolt snap on a 2 inch ring(compact and simple) on all of my housings even our Bluefin FX1 housing.

For macro work you need a tripod/bipod/monopod, our Bluefin has a flip down macro diopter(internal) that allows extreme macro and you have to use a tripod otherwise the slightest movement seems erratic. Even standard macro work will require a tripod or solid mount of some sorts.

The focal distance varies between manufacturers, our flip down macro diopter has a focal distance of 12-18 inches and offers full frame of your image(ie a fish eyeball fills the frame) at that distance. Rememeber the # 1 tip for any video is get as close as you can to your subject. If your shooting macro you have to use lights if you want any color and good results. Let me know if you have any specific ?'s.

Re: questions

Lockable 'spring bands' with snap hooks does the trix for me.

Diving without is not an option, as I tend to not want to let the cam go before its to late.... (you're close to dead before you let your 10k++ camera system float away)

The ones shown gives good freedom when shooting, but I get the cam close to me on deco etc. The snaphooks allows for easy removal.

I use two of them as the cam w/ lights & batteries is huge.

Robert

Re: questions

Ok, so if I need a tripod for underwater macro work, who makes one that is small, really short apparently (tabletop like I've seen) and waterproof?

Dave,

Ultralight makes one but its useless, We have tried everything and the best solution is still a cheap land tripod like the one listed here.

http://www.amvona.com/v7/shop/?page=...roduct_id=1956

I bought one of these on Ebay for $30 and it works great, Wetpixel has had some excellent forums in the past go to

http://wetpixel.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=12493

for more info and see which tripod looks best for you. I have tried them all and the land tripod/bipod/monopod is still the best solution depending on conditions.

Re: questions

I see those tripods on E-Bay now...seems inexpensive.....BUT, if you're doing macro, wouldn't the camera be alot closer to the bottom, necessitating one of those shorty tabletop tripods?

I do not use a lanyard or a tether for my cameras, I have SEEN cameras drop to the abyss from lanyards ( I did manage to catch one once), I've had many more people report of having lost their cameras that away. Having your cameras dangle is also a good way of scratching up that acrylic port up front. You also never know what you may 'snag' (see attached photo)I have had the long standing belief that getting in the habit of always dangling your camera on deco/or after the dive is using up your 'no flood' points.
The way I look at it I'm holding on to the camera throughout the dive, period. If there is a probelm a) I will 'hook' it around my arm or b) give it a toss- Cause if its that bad a problem I don't want the added grieve of some bungy/rope system attached to me ie. Big housings + big floods = very negative.
Just my way, not the only way!

I use a standard 18 inch prusic type cord with a stainless clip. Even with this cord attached to my left chest d-ring, I never let the camera leave my hands.
