Dave,

it really depends on the topograpghy, if your in the muck at Indo or the Philippines a short tripods fine but if your in Monterey or somewhere with nice reef structure you will need a larger tripod.

There is no one perfect tripod, welcome to the world of video/photo. You will end up with several tripods if you want truely good macro video from around the world. For know get a small to medium and see how it works for you.

Re: questions

So what would you all recommend for the Amphibico Phenom that is a shorty tripod that may be on E-bay, as I suspect using them in salt water wrecks them in short order even with a rinse.

Re: questions

For lanyards I rigged two snaps with a cord on my housing that allows me to sling the entire thing like a stage bottle. It works great, provided that I don't need more than one AL40 over there too. If I do, then I have to get creative......

I don't normally use it in the ocean, except as a "safety strap" - the cord when fully unwrapped can be clipped to a chest D-ring and yet not get in the way at all - but if you drop the camera for some reason, its still tethered.

My rig runs just slightly negative - I have buoyancy tubes on the light "wings" to balance it, and the battery for the lamps is carried on my belt - an E/O cord takes care of being able to disconnect it.
