Reinhard and Michael (EKPP) did a long exploration dive in France and recorded via infrared video. IIRC, that was done about 5-6 years ago (?). There was a link for the video, but since had been taken down (music copy-right issue, IIRC ?). I have seen the video, it was very impressive for cave application. The person who helped make the equipment is on Rebreather World, so he will sound out if he wants.

![]() | Re: underwater infared digital photography. Several of the Nikon cameras can be converted for IR sensitivity and the D70 out of the box works quite well (I am told). The conversion removes the hot mirror filter from the CCD (CMOS) chip and is replaced with optic quality glass of the same thickness. With all that said, I am wondering what would be seen since the IR is mostly temperature sensitive. Also, focusing could be tricky as the wavelengths of IR require some manual focus compensation. There are a few lenses being made for specific camera bodies which are pre-tuned for that difference, allowing auto focus to work. They show up on Ebay every once in a while. Also, a fellow named Klaus on the Nikon Gear website sells them. Hope this helps. |

I didn't think the autofocus would have needed adjustment. I thought it looked for the sharpest image with highest contrast. So it wouldn't matter what the wavelength was, it would auto focus ok.There are a few lenses being made for specific camera bodies which are pre-tuned for that difference, allowing auto focus to work. Maybe you'd just need a filter to cut out "normal" wavelengths? |

Have been looking at infared digital photography lately, but as of yet not done any myself, was wondering if anyone out there in Rebreather World as tried it. Hi,Pro's & Con's, your thoughts. all the best. I'm only an armchair specialist, having not tried this myself. But, from what I've read digital cameras with the i.r. filter removed are sensitive to near infrared down to 1100 or 1200 nm. Unfortunately, water is qute a good absorber in this region of the spectrum. Approximately 10 times better than red light. So you'll probably only be able to get usable image close to the surface on sunny days. Just my thoughts, Keith. |

Just my thoughts, Keith. your right,I heard this sometime ago.I have been told by the experts that with a digital camera set up for IR and the right weather conditions you might get to 5-7 meters below surface before the wave length is absorbed, and possible more with a film set-up. But this is only hear say, as I have not seen anything yet from either media source. So until I can get to try this out myself, or someone else can share there work with us, we'll keep looking. thanks for you input. all the best. |
