What kind of video camera housings?

Hi groupe.
Hope you can help me out here.. I'm thinking about doing some video for the first time under water.
My diving is to about 80 meters, so which video camera housings can you recommend?

All regards
Michael Bering

Hi Michael,

There aren't too many housings that can go down to +80 meters. Two that spring to mind are Gates and Amphibico.

Which camera are you going to use?

If you have a deep pocket have a look at the RED and a gates housing. It will probably set you back for around 60.000$ to 75.000$ and you will have to wait at least a year.

Re: What kind of video camera housings?

Hi Peter.
Thanks for the quick response. I must admit.. I don't have a camera yet. Want to find the housing first. I'm not doing any recordings to The National Geografic or so. It's just for fun and for my own use, so I'm not going to spend 60.000 $

Regards

Re: What kind of video camera housings?

I used a Gates as a resort videographer for 2 years, treated it badly, never replaced the o-rings and it never let me down. Their customer service is excellent. Worth the money.

Re: What kind of video camera housings?

You should check out the new seatools housing, and sony HC7. It's HD, and the housing is rated to 100m. I have one and love it. It's made from machined aluminum, and is very small.

Actually if you put a deposit down today on a red they are saying May 08, not too bad..5 months or so. And the Gates housing for the red is supposed to be out around june 08. I have no idea what the gates housing will go for, im guessing 12-15k, but camera, lens (18-50mm),battery pack, and hard drives will set you back about 26k.

I have the L&M bluefin with the Sony A1U camera and am pretty happy with it. I believe the guy at L&M told me 400' unofficially, and *think* 300' officially. A guy on here named Russ posts every so often, he works there, he can probably be more accurate. Ive had mine to 200' (60m) in Truk Lagoon last year, thats about the deepest the camera has gone.

BTW, im considering selling off my housing, HD light pack and camera if you are interested. Would make someone a heck of a deal. The reason im selling is Im leaning on getting one of the new sony ex1 cameras, they are getting good reviews, but dont think anyone has a u/w housing to the market yet for them. They are really a big step in technology, being that they use flash memory instead of tape, 3 1/2 ccd's, etc.

Hope this helps..
