The reason im selling is Im leaning on getting one of the new sony ex1 cameras, they are getting good reviews, but dont think anyone has a u/w housing to the market yet for them. They are really a big step in technology, being that they use flash memory instead of tape, 3 1/2 ccd's, etc.
The EX range is interesting.

But using flash memory will create its own challenges. These cards are still pretty expensive. So for longer trips you will need hard disk storage to transfer the footage from the cards. Taking a laptop + hard disk on top of video gear and rebreathers these days with the airlines cutting the bagage allowances ...
But they are great if the trip is short (daylies, two day trips).

A good website to find out what is on the market for underwater video is: digideep.com :: list of all underwater housings suitable for digital photography and videography.... If you have specific questions you can also post them on Wetpixel.com :: Underwater Photography and Videography in the video forums.

Re: What kind of video camera housings?

Hi,

I just got a Gates Housing for my Sony HC7. The housing is very compact, looks extremely well made. I heard excellent reviews on Gates housings, and I like the mechanical approach vs. the electronic systems.
I got HC7 housing from marinevisions.com with the 20W niterider pro lights pack and wide angle port. It shipped with a pelican case and O-ring set. It looked to me like a very good deal, especially with the weak USD.
I can't wait to get it wet!
I like this system also because I intent to travel with it and it is compact enough to fit into my carry on (or the important and expensive bits anyway).

Gates*HC7*GP25*w/lights*Pak...

The service at marinevisions was great. System shipped in two days with tracking to Switzerland without problems.

Good luck in your search.

Alex

I agree the prices for the 8gb cards for the ex border on rape charges.

And yes, I take my laptop anywhere I go no matter what, i use it for anything from keeping me entertained on flights to d/l my dive logs to transferring and editing video if the mood strikes.

My main getup for the plane is backpack with dive stuff (mask, computers, etc) with the laptop and then a carry on "briefcase" (aka pelican case) with either my video setup or my mini booster pump.
Havent figured out a way to get both to a site yet so I pick one or the other. My checked bag consists of a few clothes and my sorb. A little off topic, but Im curious if its worth it to ditch almost all the clothes and just buy some at my destination rather than pay the overage the airlines have been charging. On the plus side, you can give your clothes away before you leave and help some of the less unfortunate.

If you fly to or from the US you are lucky because you'll get either 2 x 23 kg or 2 x 32 kg. For us poor Europeans it is a different story. Most of the time we are only allowed 20 Kg in total plus sometimes an extra allowance for clothing. I have a trip booked to Bali - Komodo flying with Singapore airlines. We get 35 KG per person because we are flying in business. Each KG on top is 70 €.

I will not have too many clothes with me and will buy locally. Taking sorb and tanks ... just impossible at those rates.

Re: What kind of video camera housings?

Gonna ad a vote for the Gates housings.

A video pro I used to work with had one down to 136m on a free dive record we were supporting. No problems as far as I can remember except that the float he had on top of the wide angle dome port imploded. No damage to the camera just, a momentary heart stopper and sphincter tightener for him and the rest of the team.

Gates sent him a new float, so my vote for their customer service as well.

I've used one of their smaller myself housings as well and they are a dream to use, with no electronics to fail.

Cheers

Seb

Yeah, Most of the time its 70lbs (32kilos) x2 internationally but it seems like nowadays there is a new rule change every week at the airlines. Domestically in the states its 2x50lbs (22kilos). I used to just suck it up and pay the extra $20-50 for overweight but I see unite just raised their overweight fee domestically to $70 for anything over 50lbs (22kilos).
It kind of sucks because some of the trips I go on are booked through my dive shop and I have no idea what airline it will be until after after I book.

Re: What kind of video camera housings?

There is also Sealux Unterwassergehäuse/Underwater housings für Nikon - Panasonic - Sony - Bleuchtung - digitale und analoge Unterwasserfotografie
I use one of their housings for my Nikon D200 still camera. I'm sure they have equally great housings for the video's.
