Ambient light at 56m in temperature waters...

Our group does regular dives in the 50m-65m range in Cape Town. The conditions at the bottom can vary from less than 1m vis up to 30m viz and the ambient light levels are always low. The temp is usually around 10 degrees centigrade. We have many awesome wrecks in this depth range and for the first time I took my camera down with no strobes to try some low ambient light shots.

The wreck is the General Botha (1947) and she lies at 56m in the middle of False Bay. Click HERE for the photos.

ISO's very high due to low light levels, generally around 1600. Older generation Nikon's like my D70 don't handle high ISO's very well with lots of noise in the shot, but the new D300 is apparently the answer to world tension in this regard. If you have the time, patience and cooperative dive buddies you could use a low ISO and a slow shutter speed with a tripod.

Re:

Played around with the D300 yesterday, it handles low light exposure very well indeed. The full size sensored D3 blows my mind though, better than anything else I've seen in that respect. And their new 3"/290,000 pixel monitors are awesome.
