HELP! weird sh1t is happening with my Nikon D200

Hi forum,

Posted the below on a dive photography forum but no help - maybe someone here can help!

<I have been trying to use a pair of Inon D2000S with my Nikon D200 (using fibre optic cables) with min to no success.

I am facing the following issues:

With the camera flash setting to manual and Strobes set to manual the strobes fire but they fire at a fixed power (ie changing the strobe manual power setting has no effect!)

I decided to test the strobes manual operation using another camera:-

Holding the end of the slave cable directly to the built in flash of the Nikon I get the same results: The strobe only fires at a fixed power level and setting it to any of the manual power settings or even setting it on FULL has no effect - it just fires at the same fixed level (quite low)

But,

Holding the slave cable end against the built in flash on my point and shoot (sony DSCW7) it works as it should (manual power levels and full power work)

So it apears that the D200 built in flash (in manual mode) isnt powerful enough to properly triggert the strobe??? (even though Its set to max)

HELP!!!! !!!! Diving HMS Prince of Wales this weekend and was hoping to take some pics!

Cheers
Mike

Hi Mike

I'm just thinking out loud here. But your build-in flash has a commander mode option for either ttl or manual control of several external SB-600 or SB-800 flash units. Perhaps you can control your Inon units by that.

It's the pencil icon in the main menu - e3 - C / commander mode
Have you tried to change the build-in to commander and make it go on manual. Then change group A or B to manual and specify the power setting.
There are 4 channels in the bottom of the menu that you can try one after the other.
Test by shooting the pictures in manual mode and vary the power settings on the strobe as well as camera menu.

If that dosen't work, I'd suggest to switch to regular sync cords. The D200 will fire old antiquated Sea & Sea YS60 strobes by that. So it should do the same thing with a Inon strobe.

Hope it helps
Johnny

Thanks Johnny,

I think Ive just solved it (the G&T helped)

Turns out theres a little magnet your supposed to stick into the back of the inons to use with camera with pre-flash off (as it was on the nikon)

so looks like thats all it was
