Re: 147m on Pelagian

Hi,

Ive used/taught a few CCR units over the years but tended to lean towards OC as it is more forgiving during the type of stuff i do. Im sure if id have caved more then i would have bought some kind of box to benefit from their relative cost effectiveness. If im working im not paying for gas and need the predictability that OC provides especially with unpredictable customers. Ive occasionally used boxes for fun but one didnt really stand out above the rest as i have developed special filters that reject the marketing 'claims' of manufacturers

I like the Pelagian for its size and it seems as capable as i need it to be. I havent seen any ECCR units that i would strap to my back for deeper dives. maybe if someone gave me a gold plated twin-boris i would like that too

I still like the odd deep dive and sometimes my mind is elsewhere and ive no established faith in electronics at the moment neither have i made my mind up about scrubbers in deep water either. The manual add system of the Pelagian seems to work fine if you use the correct first stages and i like the low profile lungs too - it feels only marginally bulkier than my existing OC harness.

I have incorporated my Pelagian into my twinset for deeper dives, this gives me both my faith in OC kit in deep water and plenty of bail-out if the rebreather has a hiccup. Ive learned over the years to take plenty because I still cant breathe the water yet despite nearly having to several times when i was a little too optimistic

hope that answers your questions

Re: 147m on Pelagian

Congratulations on the dive!

What was the water temp (top to bottom)?

I’ve read about the Pelagian and find the needle valve for the O2 a very interesting design. I’ve never seen the kit in person or spoke to some one that dives it. Do you have to play with the O2 needled valve on your kit much through out a dive to this depth? Or are the adjustments done in very little increments?

Re: 147m on Pelagian

Hello,

the water temp was 27c at the top getting down to 18/19 at the bottom...all quite pleasant. I wore a 5mm wetsuit and occasionally a hood. Ive done the bottom in a 3mm suit in the past but it was nadgers chilly

The needle valve could be used to set a steady flow for longer bottom times but im just using it on the longer deco stops and also to offset hypoxic dils at/near the surface...the rest of the time i hit the manual add as and when. Once im shallower than say 10metres i start to wind the valve open and by 6m its fully open backing off again at 3m. If im wearing the twinset/Rebreather ensemble i turn the dil valve off during the ascent to save setpoint fiddling some. I might patent the RB/OC design calling it ReBoC - do you think anyone will mind?

Andy from Rebreatherlab has a booth at DEMA and i will be there too...if you want a demo of the unit...drop by

cheers

Mark

What's about the Düsseldorf's Boot? Are you planning to be there, I'm also interested to see the rig.

Best

Re: 147m on Pelagian

Hello,

Just back from another HMS Victoria trip to Lebanon

We only had 4 days of good weather but got some good dives in. I used my Pelagian again down to 145m this time...conditions were pitch black with 12c on the bottom. Carl M from Samui (another Pelagian user) did his Trimix Explorer program in a 5mm wetsuit which was pretty hardcore! brrrrr

No dramas with my kit, but some of the others had some divelight probs of the 1400euro 'state of the art' water bottle variety...oh how i laughed. My new Greenforce dual 150 watt HID variable focus dive lights worked well and cut through the gloom fantastically which was good as we would have been in darkness otherwise

Check out my new funky-deep-cam on a budget approach. Ive put my Panasonic SD5 High Def camcorder in an D8 torch body...works fantastic - it records everything unfortunately due to having no buttons but try getting a 150m rated camera housing for under £50 elsewhere

We all used Decochek to plan the dives...thats more than 20 circa 150metre dives done in the past few months with dozens more between 80-120m. Decided to run 1.5po2 on the bottom with 1.2po2 during the stops - only 12 dives like this so far but the 4 divers who tried it with me all said they felt better afterwards.

Will edit out some of the new wreck shots and post up soon enough

Cheers,

Mark

Hello Mark,

very nice post indeed and very clever way for the camera. i bet you got sound on it as well, as the sound would vibrate on the glass. i had the ikelite housings before and had no mic, but they would vibrate and the sound would come out fine.

i am planning to go to Victoria in April with Cedric and a few other friends, after we do some dives on zenobia.

i would be very grateful if you can share some information on the wreck that you might have. who is the man in Lebanon to contact? we are planning of doing the trip with our boat from Cyprus, which we will have our compressors onboard etc.

Thanks.
