Argon bottle attachment

Hello all just wondering about how people have been attaching an argon bottle to the unit.I currently have it attached to one of the on board cylinders via a second cylinder clamp. However this tends to become an issue when carrying multiple stages as the cylinder tends to get in the way.Any ideas would be appreciated thanks in advance

Re: Argon bottle attachment

Hey Andy
I was using this for a while. It’s a titanium butt mount that’s big enough to carry a 14 cubic foot tank. The black thing on the back is a chunk of foam that I installed and painted. Because the kit is just a little ass heavy the foam gives the perfect buoyancy. The mount/stand is five inches tall. I’ve recently made a syntactic foam butt mount that’s three inches tall but it won’t hold a BC / Dry suit inflation bottle. The titanium one might end up in the Frankie scuba graveyard. Or may be to you for the right price. I’m now mounting the bottle to my on board tank like you. I also mount another bottle of O2 to the other on board tank to even out the kits trim. I’ve only made two dives like this and so far I’m pleased. I’m using my kit more as a deep diving rig so I want another bottle of O2 plus my two bail out bottles. If you decide to make or get something like I have I highly recommend installing something to give the ass of your kit some buoyancy. The black foam in this picture is no longer perfect it got crushed after a deep dive. If you’re interested in making one make sure you get ocean grade syntactic foam.

Also take a look at the old post by narked at 90 ( Boris Stand) there’s some pictures to give you some Ideas.

Cheers Frankie

Re: Argon bottle attachment

Dose it count if it isn't argon.
I carry my drysuit gas on my left waist harness, right back at the wing.
I have used both a .9l ali as well as 1.5l ali.
It is nicely out of the way once in the water but it is just another bit of hinderance on the surface.

Just a quick question; are you using argon? Maybe a dumb question but if you are using another gas maybe its better to plug your suit into your rich gas. By running a larger EANx tank (10ltr for example) you always have the option of breathing the extra gas if things go wrong, also means one less 1st stage to fail, one less tank to maintain etc.

Hi no ive never used argon in the cylinder so its just good old air that i use. I currently dive with two ali 80s but still prefer to use an argon bottle. When i did my course with phil short i did use purely off-board for bc and suit inflation however i found this slightly messy when removing the stages.

Re: Argon bottle attachment

Hi frankie thanx for the reply i would consider mounting it like you have at the base. However i have an older unit which has the case clip on the under side which would make it tricky to find a box that would fit.

I also mounted a BC / dry suit inflation bottle on top of the kit, and on the side of our waist strap.

I tried mounting a steel 8 Cubic foot tank on the top of the rig. It helped even out the kits trim. But it was a entanglement issue, it would also hit my head, and awfully ugly!! So I abandoned that idea.

I also tried to side mount this bottle and because I have short stubby arms it’s a real bitch to quickly get to my shut off valves so I abandoned that idea.

I’ve used one of my bail out tanks as BC / Dry suit inflation and I personally want to leave that gas for bail out and bail out only. Specially on my deep dives

I’m a tweaker with my dive gear and probably have one of every thing. I’m constantly trying different things to find the perfect set up for my style of diving. I’m sure if you wanted to make a butt mount it could be done. I’ve seen the older style Boris so I under stand what you’re dealing with.

My biggest concern on mounting the tanks to my on board tanks is entanglement. I can easily get to the valves but I’m not so sure if something got wedged between them. Have you had any bad experiences with mounting that tank there? I’m mainly a wreck diver and I worried about a cable or something getting wedged there.

Well I’m off to the local quarry to do a little tweaking and enjoy the last dive of 2006! I just got the golem gear side mount kit. I’m going to try diving the stage bottles that way. My first two dives I made the bungee cords were way to tight/close to my torso. Have a great 2007, be safe and Dive Dive Dive your Boris!!! And Happy year to every body

Cheers Frankie

Re: Argon bottle attachment

I use a couple of double ended boltsnaps to attach my argon cylinder to the LH side of my backplate, I have my HID battery mounted on the RH side. The length of the boltsnaps means the cyl sits nicely in the water and doesn't interfere with reaching the valves.

I also do alot of wreck diving ive now done around 50 dives with it attached in this way. However ive found mounting the cylinder in this way tends to hinder attaching stages especially ali 80s.On 50% of the diving i do i would be happy using off-board but on deeper dives where i could be carrying upto 3 stages i like keeping hoses to a minimum to avoid a clustered chest.Have you had similar problems with attaching stages when your kit is configured in this way? with regards to entanglement ive never had any problems with it attached in this way.

I am with Fil on this one, I just run my wing off my lean mix and my suit inflation off my rich mix bailouts.

Cheers,

Dave Cooper.
