The town is named "Aap Yores" ![]() Honestly, I am surprised to see the unit is about the same height and width as the Insp. The thickness is a bit much for me (similar to my PVR-BASC or BMR-500). The argument about adding the OTS-CL into the overall thickness doesn't apply to me since we use the original Dave Thompson's BMCL which adds no thickness to the unit.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Boris Naked - Ouroboros Build Up! Phi I stand corrected I will brush up on my names of villages... The thing has the same dimensions as the Inspiration but weighs in slightly heavier. I think there is a saying "right tools for the right jobs". As you know I have one of your travel boxes which has the Vision electronics, back lungs and one of those herring bone back plates, it is as light as a feather and breathes just as well as the front mounted lungs. The Ouroborus for me is to go that little deeper (longer duration scrubber). F |

No argument from me on that point. But I also know a lot of people bought a Porsche 911 to drive to the grocery store as well. The day that I dive exploratory caves like DrJM or DrMike, I will look seriously into the Boris. For now, it would be a waste for me to dive in the same range I could do comfortably on either of the KISS or Evolution units with a lot less drag.

| Still Learning.... Current Rebreather/s: | Re: Boris Naked - Ouroboros Build Up! On the subject of the "right tools for the right jobs" I have to admit that I have just ordered an Ouroboros as "My First Rebreather". I HAVE done a number of dives on a Drager and the Inspiration/Evolution community here in the Netherlands is quite strong BUT I also have to admit that I have no intention of pushing the limits of what this rebreather can potentially do for quite some time (if ever - given the kind of diving that the people behind it and those on this list seem to consider normal). Am I crazy? Quite possibly, but I've convinced myself that my reasoning is sound. It goes something like this: 1) This could be "the last suit I'll ever wear". In 16 years of diving I've made lots of kit changes (always referred to as upgrades - some more than others) but at over 40 years of age I'm not sure I have the opportunity to train, build up experience on and expose the limitations (against my needs) of a series of rebreathers - maybe you younger divers can 2) My partner looks on my safety as VERY important and wants me around to see our twins grow up - I have no argument with this and it has the advantage that I could "justify" the cost over the Inspiration/Evolution 3) I can afford it now - maybe later on things will change 4) My diving is a little slow at the moment - so I can take time to learn to use a complex piece of kit without feeling I'm losing out on too many dives 5) All my diving life I've bought kit that can do more than I need it to (50m rated regs when my diving was limited to 20m) so buying excess, but potentially useful, capability isn't new. 6) My job description boils down to "rocket scientist" and I couldn't resist all those redundant features, fancy pipework and other bells and buzzers (OK it's not a good reason) 7) I wanted to train with an instructor I know and trust and (without being derogatory to others) Phil S meets the requirements. Am I concerned I've wasted money? yes but we all buy things with features/functions we never use (cars, digital cameras, DVD-recorders the list is endless) and maybe this will turn out to be another. IF it does keep your eyes on the Rebreathers for Sale section!! Ant S |

This is just IMHO, and I am sure others will disagree, but those are some of the worst reasons I have ever read about someone justify the decision to buy a US$15,000 CCR unit. But as long as it makes you happy... ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Boris Naked - Ouroboros Build Up! Maybe Phi is being a little too harsh, I know he is a b*strd of an instructor but I know he is soft and fluffy on the inside. We all have our reasons, having enough cash in the first place is a gooden. Thinking that the Ouroborus will never be upgraded isn't a gooden. I have a feeling bits and bobs will change, starting with a coloured screen and GF software. As for safety: a CBR900 (lovely machine ) on its own will not crash at 300kph! F |

Trying to justify spending money on diving in general is fairly pointless, however justifying why you bought/plan to buy a certain piece of gear over another is always worthwhile... if to no one else but yourself sometimes. The build report that started this thread was as good a piece of advertising as the Boris has, I seen it at shows and underwater and it evidentally works but seeing the detail and care thats gone into the design was very interesting. One reason you missed was this thread- its as good a reason as any other! Lastly I think we should raise a glass to Ant's misses for excepting "safety" as a reason to spend $15,000 instead of $10,000 on what is our hobby!BEN |
