Alitalia apply special price if you declare that in the box that you use for Boris's transport there is scuba equipment (obviously that they usually check if its true!).
I traveled from Amsterdam to Milan with my Boris in his original Case and I payed 40 euro to Alitalia for this extra weight!
I hope that this could help you!

I had no problems with BA taking the Boris to the red sea in April. Thanks to their new policy you can get sporting stuff in there for free. Between the 2 of us we took nearly 90kgs of luggage and didn't pay any excess. I got the flights for free aswell on air miles. Only issue was that in the flight case, Boris is 33kgs according to the airport scales (32 is the max they'll take for any one item). I took the scrubber out and put it in the soft bag to get under. The original plan (before the other half got pregnant) was to take both Boris' with us - that would have got us probably over 110 kgs I reckon, but the BA policy right now allows you loads of luggage with dive kit.

Not sure what we'll do when they refuse to move anything weighing over 23 kgs though. Probably only take the Boris' to destinations we can drive to. To be honest we mainly dive in the UK anyway....

Ha guys.. sorry been busy w/ the work thing.

This is the suit case I travel w/ the boris..

International Traveller Luggage - Ultra-Lightweight 26.5in. Wheeled Packing Case 4884326 - Luggage Online

Dont pay anything more then $100 for the thing..
( yes .. it is less then 10lbs .. not 5, my mistake)

Fits in nicely.. b/w, etc ... 68.5 lbs. dry - cylinders of course are
separate .. thats carry on for me, so I can keep an eye on them.

Ive taken Me Boris to 6 different areas/countries now w/ this case and no problems..
(taptap)

I am going to start some experiments on the weight thing this week.

Will Post results.. :-)

Re: Travel with Boris

I sometimes split boris into two boxes, one has boris the other has the backplate, the dome, and the scrubber in it.

Usually though this isnt necessary if I contact the airlines first (EUROPE) or if Im flying to the US. Sending my gear ahead of time is a LOT cheaper than paying excess!

My new sidemount Rebreather weighs a lot less and once I get the carbon fiber cannister (currently has AL) should even be carry on.

fwiw the complete unit In the original 'flight' box less the backplate (which goes in my carry-on) weighs in at exactly 30kg (66lBS) actually its 30.2kg to be precise

Cheers
M
