boris and the dreaded backache

HI .
Can anyone suggest any fix for the backache i feel after diving the boris.Still
waiting for the foam base mod for the base of the unit.As i am tall the unit sits on the small of my back and during deco today my back was in bits.I know phil short uses a doughnut wing for this reason but has anyone used the NARKED AT 90 BASE PLATE to take the weight off your back when boat diving and on long deco stops. The unit is fab apart from this minor niggle.

Hope to hear some imput on this issue.

Paul.

Paul,

My experience on other type of rebreathers is that it can be a matter of adding more weigths to the top of the unit (as in five kg at the top). The positive buoyancy of the hose and counterlung(s) try to force you in a heads up position; if you try to stay horizontal, you basically strain your back in an effort to fight this. The test which I apply for determining whether there is enough weight, is what happens if I completely relax under water (heads up or down).

Rgs,

Niels Doorduijn

Re: boris and the dreaded backache

FWIW with a good (correctly shaped) wing (I use an old diverite tec) I find theres no need for a foam arse pad or any top weights.

Re: boris and the dreaded backache

Paul,

Hello buddy, hope you are well.

Try uncrossing the shoulder straps and give it a go like that, it will change the position that the unit sits in.

I spoke to Al Wright at CCRB last week and the syntactic foam stands are imminent.

Cheers,

Dave.

Re: boris and the dreaded backache

Thanks for all the advice guys.

Hi Dave i altered the harness as you mentioned and have been diving it like that since the course.Had a 10/50 mix on sat and had a great dive on the unit in dotty ,apart from the backache on deco as i mentioned. 104mins total
in water time, cant wait to get the 50hrs in to get the code to activate trimix
function on the handset. I too am wating for the foam base to give it a try.

Regards Paul.

Re: boris and the dreaded backache

Hello,

Also for FWIW ...

I have been using a good piece of foam on the bottom of mine since I
received the unit.. It sure does work in the water and helps with putting
the unit on.

(You might be able to see it in my avatar)

I did see phil shorts setup w/ the donut wing and like that solution.

I would like to try it out, I am shorter and like the shorter foot print w/
the setup.

Best of luck w/ your final solution.
