Meg New Battery Option. Simple, Effective, and no welding

I've split from this thread.
http://www.rebreatherworld.com/offic...tml#post149788

Please note that the following IS NOT factory certified, but only a proven option for me in my relatively remote location.

The above detailed battery pack (in the primary) went on another shallow dive for 2 hours + 3 hours sleep mode, no manual addition so significantly heavier solenoid duty than normal.

After resting for a week, the battery pack voltage went up from 7.9 to 8.5. Did the above diving and pack depleted back down to 7.8 and is back up again to 8.3.

In summary, in the primary the parallelled dual-9V pack has done 4 hours of heavier duty than normal, and seems capable of at least another 2 hours. Pack will stay in for this coming Sundays outing.

Although this is not a long duration option, it does provide much predictability on voltage depletion. I intend to run it down to 7V, and then let it run on the bench to see how much longer it lasts. Any of you welding your own packs may find this an interesting option.

In the secondary, this pack ran for 16 hours (+~12 hrs in sleep).

In manufacturing this battery pack, the batteries are connected in parallell. This means + with + and '-' with '-'. If you connect them in series ('+' with '-') you will create an 18V pack and you will fry your electronics.

THIS OPTION TO BE EXERCISED AT YOUR OWN RISK

In the hopes that it is useful and safe for you.

Gilles hi,

i hope you are well. have you done your testing with this set up yet?

do you still use this way?

please let me know. another thought is, due to my upgrading, do you think or have you had any information that this works or not on 2.06? i think there wouldbe no problem as it would be just software, but i thought i might ask.

Thanks.

You are aware that by the time the meg warns you of a low battery voltage the 9v battery is stone dead right?

Thanks Dave,

yes, i know, thanks for reminding me but i guess it takes a few dives to that that low right? this is why i wanted to ask Gilles.

I will continue to use this as an option. I'm still using a 2.01 version (that's giving me troubles at the moment). You would have to make sure your 2.06 has potential tolerance to 10V.

This is true and I have observed something similiar in my bench testing. As the voltage gets below 7V, the amount of current needed to power the solenoid pushes the cells beyond their Ampere providing capacity.

A big mitigation to this however, is the linear, and predictable drop in cell voltage as it gets used up. 6 hours of safe heavy duty usage (to 7V) for an easily replace-able cell is very useful IMV.

What I truly dislike about the Rolls Royce option (i.e. Lithium C cells), is they perform great for a long time, and they suddenly die. Just not comfortable with that fact. I prefer being able to monitor the progression of the depletion, and if I have any doubt, just replace.

Running down until the warning goes off ruins the dive IMV. Prefer to just avoid the whole scenario in the first place.

Gilles,

have you tried connecting 3 of them in a row? i think they would fit, dont you? that would give a lot more time right?

Thanks

If you can get 3 of them (connected in parallell) in the battery box, they will last some 1.5x longer than with only 2.

Re: Meg New Battery Option. Simple, Effective, and no welding

Hello,
Nobody uses this type of work?
Personally I made 2 sets of batteries
Easy, no weld on batteries. Same batterie for HSE

Captain,

not to say that this will not work, but i think guys are not fan of the lithium's quick dropage in voltage once it starts to go down...

but, this could be used as a back up method in case you are about to dive and realised your batteries are down.

Thanks.
