Re: Pos. check on Optima

Hey Mark,
Thanks for the update. I will order the 022 Viton 90 durometer when I run out.

You brought up a few good points. This might be a hijack.
First of all why is O2 lube used on Rebreather fitttings? Silicone works much better as a lube. Is it not safe to inhale or what? There isn't enough pressure for need of the O2 capability of the grease.
And second, your right about the over use of grease. If you can see it , it's too much. I rebuild regs for shops for a little extra cash in my spare time. You should see what happens when too much grease is used, it looks like glue.
Also I only use O2 grease if it needs it. silcone works better in most applications.

When used correctly with the proper o2 lubricant, o2 lube is a better lube (muchhigher lubricity rating than silicon).. Using an oxygen compatible also lubricant prevents potential cross contamination..

There are 2 types of o2 lubes mcg-111 and mcg-129..

MCG 129 should be used for general lubrication and especially with static seals (its thicker and has a greater viscosity), while mcg-111 should be used for dynamic lubrication such as the piston on a regulator.. The properties of the 2 lubricants are quite different..

If you look at reg manuals from manufacturers like scubapro, they recommend oxygen lube for all their products even if they are going to be used for air service since the regs have better performance with o2 lube..

Re: Pos. check on Optima

I use oxygen compatible lube for everything because Fill Express does not have any other type of lube in the store as a matter of policy. Becuase so much of the equipment we handle is considered to be oxygen service (not always by me, mind you, but the people who brought it in to us claim it is) we don't want to take the risk of inadvertantly using a non-compatible lube. For the same reason, our stock o-rings are all Viton, we don't keep any nitrile in the store either.

I would be concerned about using silcone lube with the O2ptima... those special orange o-rings are, according to Micropore, not compatible with silicone lubes and their specific recommendation to me in a telephone conversation with Tom McKenna at Micropore was to lube them only with Christo-lube mcg-111. I suspect it doesn't really matter, especially since they are supposed to be replaced annually anyway... but I would have to go out of my way to use anything other than the recommended lube.

The 023 diameter was too large and would not stay in the groove and was so soft it would wrinkle too easily. The 90 duro is important, a standard Viton is 75 duro and nearly all nitriles are 70 duro, but I did some testing and discovered the harder slightly smaller o-ring worked much better. The thickness (first digit = 0) did not change.
Thanks for setting this information straight. I just assumed it was a larger or thicker o-ring.

So, are all of the o-rings on the hoses the same size as this?
