Not to mention he would have been much more dehyrdrated on OC.

I don't think this event had anything to do with the Optima, it was just unfortunate timing with the first units just 2 months away.

Cheers

The SK is about 4" thick.

What is the diameter of the Meg canister ?

If it is more than 4" (which I suspect it would be without having the Meg in person), than I would like to see how it will be flatter with your mod.

I will try to get together some photos etc that we have of the unit today and put them up. Seb has it pretty well cracked as far as the unit is today. We have two of them down here if anyone happens to be around Southern Mexico come by the store and take a look we usually have one sitting around but not this weekend as we are going to be diving the units over in Cozumel is the current plan.

If anyone has specific questions I will do what I can to answer them about the unit. The units we have are the first ones and they are not production line units so as well I can not speak for real production units or what they are going to look like etc. Lamar and crew will be down here in July with some updates to the lots of stuff. Again anyone in Mexico the second week of July we are going to have a nighttime sit down with Lamar and people can ask and get the info from the horses mouth.

Actually the SK is 5" thick but the Classic KISS is what I was referring to, sorry for the mix up.

Using some very rough calcualtions the Surface area at the leading of the Classic(with horizontal trim), with an 8 inch housing and assumming either 20 or 13 cft aly tanks, is approximately 314 square inches.

My Meg with the same tanks and a 7 inch housing is 267 square inches

My mods have rotated the tank brackets from the stock positions on the meg can 2.5 inches closer to my back, lying flush with my wings.

This coupled with flipping the tanks upright and sliding them down towards the base of the can, so I can reach the valves, has decreased the units obliqueness to the water and increased it's streamlining.

Adding the Mark Meadows backplate with a direct camstrap mount to the can, shaves another 1/4 -1/2 inch of my overall thickness vs. a single tanks adapter.

These are all easy mods that could be applied to the Classic, each one shaves just a little, but the overall effect is a very close fit with a unit that pierces the water a little easier, certianley enough to make a big difference in any current.

Cheers

Seb

You are right, it is 5". I said "about" since I didn't measure it. The context is now changed since they are totally different units.

Regardless, the CK does not have the thin profile as the SK but to compare the cross-profile of a BMCL unit (CK) to a OTSCL unit (Meg), you will also need to take into account of the CL in the front.

Re: Optima rebreather - fully sick or a total joke?

I earned my CCR certification diving one of the preproduction Optima's. Which I found very easy to use. The only problem I had with it was the lack of a weight pouch on the scrubber canister. I had to add five pounds to get good trim. Other than that I liked it so much that I bought one. So I bought one! I just received one of the production O2ptima's a couple days ago. It looks to be a nice and tight unit. As soon as the weather warms up a bit , I'll give it a go.

Re: Optima rebreather - fully sick or a total joke?

I'm heading down to High Springs area and Lake City where I intend to log some more time in the caves ccr'in with my Optima. John Jones in Lake City is the guy to get in touch with in N. Florida if you are looking for Optima training, cave diving, etc...

When I return I will be at some Midwest dive shows to talk Optima ccr's, and will have my Optima for display.

The first show is a benefit for a diver who has Duschenes Muscular Dystrophy, where John Chatterton will be a guest speaker. February 18th Underwater World Aquarium at Mall Of America, Bloomington MN. This is a fund raiser for the young man to assist him with an open water dive.

February 24-26 is a the Our World Underwater Show in Chicago Illinois will have Optima at the Dive Rite booth, big consumer travel and equipment show.

March 9 - 20th - sorry gone Truk Diving! hah if your not there couldn't find a Rising Sun -how about a Moon?

March 24-25 Ghost Ships Festival, a shipwreck divers dream show in Milwaukee, WI. I'll have the Optima and several other ccr's

Good Diving

Dive Rite does have weights just for this purpose. 6 pounders are on the shelf, but if you want a 5 pounder, a custom weight could be made. The weight is threaded on the canister strap. It ends up being inside the units cover and works out just right.

Is this the guy on scubaboard? There were some very interesting talks about how to dive him. Thinking somewhere between an Rebreather and a vent with the unit in the dry suit. Any word?
