O2 Injection Rod O-Ring Placement

In what position were you taught to place the o-ring for the Extend Air Cartridge when assembling your Optima?

Re: O2 Injection Rod O-Ring Placement

I was taught to put the EAC in first, then slide the O-Ring on. The reason I continue doing it that way is I like having a visual on it, knowing it is sealed & in place.... It's more or less automatic for me.... I see no reason to change.

Having it on the back end & not knowing if it's completely in place or looking at the EAC before I close it up & wondering if I remembered to pop the O-ring on just doesn't work for me...

As far as dropping or loosing the O-Ring, I have tons of them in my spares kit. Bought a bunch from McMaster Carr. They cost next to nothing....

Re: O2 Injection Rod O-Ring Placement

I learned with the old metal rod... but, once I got the upgrade I used it on top of the cartridge, just because I thought it was better... later I was "taught" at the factory to put it first and then slide the cartridge. Still do it and teach that way.

Best,

Zé.

On the side facing out, after the EAC is first inserted...

Re: O2 Injection Rod O-Ring Placement

Based on the poll results it looks like I'm the first one to say that I was taught that either way works just as well. That's not entirely accurate - in training we were taught to put the EAC in first and then the o-ring after, visually verifying that it's plugging the center tube as Richie indicated. Later on when people started talking about putting the o-ring in first it made equal sense to me, so I started doing it that way on my own. One thing I do to make sure that there isn't a gap at the bottom (and also to verify that the o-ring is in fact still there) every time I assemble the unit is to pull the o-ring back up the tube by an inch or so. That way when you slide the EAC in place you feel the extra resistance for that last inch and know that the o-ring ended up firmly pressed against the bottom of the center tube every time. And if you really want to belt-and-suspenders it you can put another o-ring on the back end, as well! :D

Re: O2 Injection Rod O-Ring Placement

I have always placed the O-ring at the top, so I could see it. Recently though I slid a couple of spare ones down near the solenoid, so when I loose mine another is right there ready for me. I did try to align one at the bottom to sit against the bottom of the cartridge, but still ensure the seal at the top.

Re: O2 Injection Rod O-Ring Placement

I was taught to put the o-ring on first, then install the extendaire. I always slide the o-ring up the tube about an inch to insure that it will seal with the new cartridge.

Never loss the o-ring when I never remove it. :D
