I agree that overall customer service is a sore point with most Rebreather makers. But remember, rushing things to market is a time honored tradition in our market based economy free world. Is there any industry where this is not the case? Why is it so? Probably because RnD/making somthing which is a little better than the generation before costs lots of money. And nobody wants to wait a minute longer to start recouping. With the exception of DiveRite and APD, none of the other CCR makers seem to have any big investors. So the concern for recouping is all the more important when it's all your money. Actually considering that the potential CCR market will always be a fraction of all divers, it's amazing that we have as many good units to choose from as we do. The Russian RBs are not nearly as shitty as one might expect. But how many of us prefer them or could even afford them if we lived in the USSR in 1980?![]() As for SMI, 2000 mile relocation+demanding big customer(US Navy)=long wait. The often unnoticed benefit for an SMI customer is a lot of above and beyond testing and innovation. The Prism scrubber is the most tested scrubber there is. The Navy also requires things to be simple, easy to use and to be compact and light weight. It may not tickle the fancy of those who desire ultimate flexability, but personally, my brain and back thank the USN and SMI. Supposedly APD/Buddy spent $250,000 tooling up just for the case, a matter of appearance. Does anybody think Jetsam, IDS or SMI have put a lot of money into aesthetics? All things considered, the fact that all 3 make products which are not only equal to or exceed the bigger manufacurers products, is a surprise to say the least. Steve, you crack me up and you know your stuff, but I think it's enough with the Prism bashing. To my knowledge, they have always updated/replaced any out dated hardware/software free of charge. If you know of any Prism owners who think the company is guilty of bad faith after dealing with them you are welcomed to let us know. Am I suggesting for evan a minute that we shouldn't complain? Hell no. that's about the only thing that can get our tired, half broke manufacturers off their arses. They need us to complain. Really. Let's drive them right into the grave. At least they'll know we care. I myself have things to complain about when it comes to SMI. Waiting until the day before I have to leave on a trip half way around the world to send me my unit back is not prudent, to say the least. You should have heard me pleading with the UPS dispatcher to open a truck which was supposed to remain sealed until the day after I was due in the Philippines. I now have a PhD in creative cursing.-Andy Last edited by silent running : 24th November 2005 at 05:57. |
