HH HUD Issues

having issues with the hud failing to power up at secondary activation. problem seemed to begin after i removed the HUD/DIVA connection from the head, cleaned with pro gold and replaced. i used pliers to secure the connections as instructed. when the problem initially occured , i reseated that connection several times. it then began to work properly. but after the secondary powered down, the problem reoccured. replaced secondary battery with a fresh one and the hud worked fine. but the same problem again occured after power down. now i have to remove and replace secondary battery for the hud to power up...... any suggestions?

Who instructed you to use pliers? That connection should NEVER have tools applied to it!!! Tighten it finger tight; push in on the end and tighten the knurled ring until it stops.

Jeff, I dont' have an answer to your problem - Sorry, but I do have a related question.

I have NEVER unscrewed the HUD cable from the head, since it's initial assembly at the beginning of my training in July/August 2007, but I've been hearing lately that I should unscrew it, clean it with Pro Gold and replace it. In light of the fact that it caused problems in your case, should I just not mess with it at this point and deal with it during the annual maintenance?

Hey Adrian,

For benefit of the OP I have had minor HUD issues going back to when I first got my unit almost one year ago. At about the third day of training the DIVA stopped working. After playing with the connection and drying the inside, etc., we determined (assumed?) that the cord being bent at more than a 90 degree angle was breaking the connection of the wires themselves. The plug-in fitting as it came tightened from the factory forces the DIVA plug to point slightly counter-clockwise from straight down on my particular unit, resulting in the excessive bend in the wire. We switched the DIVA with another and it worked after that.

Every once in a while thereafter, the new one will occasionally not work when booting up the secondary. I have found that unplugging the connection, drying and treating with Deoxit Gold usually cures it. All that being said, however I dive the unit looking at both handsets all the time. I will occasionally focus on the HUD blinking green and I do notice when it occasionally goes to red; but I don't ever rely on it for ppO2 monitoring for any extended period of time.

Hi John,

As I indicated, I have been fortunate and have had no issues with my HUD, so I think I may just not mess with it and assume it has a water tight seal where it screws into the head.

I too do not generally rely on the HUD for PO2 monitoring, as I tend to check my primary and my VR3 often throughout the dive, but it's probably not a bad idea if we both learn to rely a bit more on the HUD, because I know you are focussed on the photography thing, as am I, and more time can often pass between handset checks then we would like. Remember, my handset failed the other day, and fortunately, I picked up on it pretty quickly, but had I had an interesting subject I was shooting pictures of, it might of taken me much longer to realize the problem - I would not have wanted to realize there was a problem only because of the vibrating mouthpiece! But that could have been the case! Monitoring the HUD more often, would probably avoid that happenning!

I think a healthy balance between checking the HUD and the handsets is probably the solution, but from your comments, I suspect your balance leans more towards the handsets, as does mine!

I should have clarified - I agree with your "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" protocol in your case. My point about drying out the connection and Deoxit was more expanding on what to try if one does have the occasional connection issue.

Talk to you offline about the Keys details ...

Yes - send your Head/DIVA directly to us before you dive the unit again.

Pliers are NOT necessary, and can cause damage to your pins and/or wiring (which is epoxy sealed).

Send it along, and we'll do a quick turn around on it for you. I want to make sure we isolate exactly what is going on before you get back in the water with it.

My first Diva HUD failed streight away. My replacement second one worked fine and I never took it off the unit.

Once a year sounds good to me.
