HUD problem

Maybe this will help someone else, maybe not.

Ever since the initial assembly of my Optima, the HUD did not flash. We removed the battery from the secondary handset and put it back in. Not a new one either! It worked fine.

This does not happen every time that I assemble my Optima, but it happens about every fourth time. It has never been an issue after the "night before" assembly.

Last weekend, while gearing up for the first dive of the day, my HUD stopped flashing, during the pre-breathe. I figured that the secondary had "gone to sleep". It would not "wake up" when I poured water on it. I removed the battery cap and put it back on, Bingo, it was working again.

Earlier this week when I contacted Kevin (Juergensen Marine) to activate the deco in my secondary, I asked him about this issue. He told me that it sounded like a bad ground in the HUD fisher connection to the canister head. He told me to clean the connection and see if it helps.

I cleaned the fischer connection and "played with" the battery cap several times during the week and have not had an issue yet. I am thinking that the problem has been fixed.

Re: HUD problem

FWIW I had a dead DIVA issue when I did my Optima training back in July. First day of training - fine; upon reassembly the second morning, no flashes from the DIVA at all. We took apart the connection, dried it out, etc., but the cable on my unit was bent at a little more than a 90 degree angle right after the stiffener and it seemed like the connection was being broken. I noticed on two other units that the cable didn't have such an extreme angle - it looks like the fitting on mine just ends up that way based on how the bulkhead was tightened at the factory. A temporary duct tape stiffener got me through the day and then we replaced the entire DIVA with a spare and I haven't had any issues since.

Note that I have the earlier metal handsets, so I don't know if the DIVA connection to the head is exactly the same, but it might be worth looking into. As far as your secondary not waking up with water being poured on it, what about simply hitting the left button? Did that not wake it up? If not it sounds like there may be more than one issue there.

Anyway, hope that helps and that you get it sorted ...

I should have been clearer. The secondary was not really asleep. I just thought that it was thus the hud not working. I just poured water into the pocket to try to wake it. When the hud still did not work, I removed the secondary from the pocket and removed the battery cap and replaced it. The hud began to work again.

Re: HUD problem

I normally put a shot of DeOxit into the plug (both the cable and the bulkhead connector) of my unit during post dive cleaning. I have never had a problem.

the HUD is a lumberg connector not a fischer connectory.. If it works occasionally it sounds like a poor contact... clean it with deoxit or some diluted white vinegar every once in a while..
