Aluminum 20's

Just mounted a pair of Aluminum 20's. They are 8 pounds lighter than the Steel 27's in total. 3,000 psi tanks.... The weight difference is noticeable.

I haven't been in the water with them yet so I don't know how much extra weight, if any, I'll need to add.

It would be nice if I could get them right up underneath the cannister but the configuration of the plastic piece won't allow it, without modification. If I like the way the tanks dive, I'll order an extra back piece and see what I can do.....

Richie,

Let us know how it goes when you get in the water with it. I noticed your O2 hose to the canister has a quick disconnect in the middle. Are the newer units coming like that or did you put that in?

That's the new Solenoid Inline Supply Shutoff....

"
The Solenoid Inline Supply Shutoff allows a diver to rapidly isolate the solenoid from the oxygen supply, in case the solenoid starts to leak oxygen into the loop or completely fails in the open position. This allows the diver to keep their oxygen supply valve in the open position and easily control PO2 via manual addition without having to turn on/turn off their supply valve. This can be useful to an already task-loaded diver in a technical dive."

They are about $125.00 John at Northeast Scuba Supply carries them as does Diverite Express.

It's a standard add on that can be purchased through any O2ptima dealer and I recommend that any technical diver that takes my class adds it.

Thanks for the input....

Seemed like a good idea.... I tried it after looking at your drawing.

The height of the tanks off the back with the spacers puts a bit too much pressure on the bolt as the valve end of the tanks bend back toward the frame. It would probably crack the frame or bend the bolt from too much stress. I may try to take your idea a little further by putting some kind of a block on it to keep the tanks straight.

I'll keep playing with it.

Richie,

It does seems to put some stress on the bolt but the fact is that my wife has been using her FX like this for some time now and it works fine. The 20's are very light. Even considerably bumpy rib boat rides don’t seem to affect much.

Did she by any chance use the Steel 27's at some point? If so I'm curious to see how much additional weight she needed when she switched over to the 20's.

Richie, she never used steel 27's. She used steel 4 litre during her course + drysuit and the works for cold water... dificult to say anything about additional weight. Can't help you there.

Re: Aluminum 20's

What's your experience of the LP27 ? I am learning on AL13 in warm wetsuit water in Florida and my trim/weighting seem to be fine. I am hoping to use the LP27 for dry suit diving in new england.

data:
3mm full wetsuit + AL80 + 6 lbs
dry suit + 300 underg. + LP80 + SS backplate + STA + 14 lbs
dry suit + 300 underg. + 2xLP112 + SS backplate + AL80 bailout + 0 lbs
so far 3mm full wetsuit + O2ptima + AL13 + AL40 bailout + 2x2 lbs (top)

Do you think

dry suit + 300 underg. + O2ptima + LP27 + AL40 bailout + 2x2 lbs = ok ?
