Re: What do you use to disinfect your loop ?

Just started using Virkon S disinfectant based on the Canadian Military Dive unit study - it kills everything and was not harmful to your gear if you rinse after decon - usual drill 10 minutes of wet contract, then rinse.

They only downside is Virkon S is also used on bird farms to kill bird flu so it's getting harder to find. I heard the mfg firm is working 24 x 7 trying to make enough to fill orders.

I just bought 10 lbs from a vet supply company - 10lbs makes 100+ gallons according to the info sheet.

I'll see if I can find the link to the Canadian study and post it.

The study report is posted at http://www.diveriteexpress.com/libra...r_Cleaning.pdf, among other places.

Re: What do you use to disinfect your loop ?

Yep, I just switched to Virkon S based on the Canadian military rebreather unit test. Only the "S" version was tested as Virkon for people was not around yet.

Virkon S won hands down over all the others tested - 10 minutes of wet contact killed everything - at 1 percent did not cause any harm to equipment and is safe for human contract - did not cause any problems with the lungs if you forgot to rinse. They recommended using 2 percent if you have blood or body fluid contact (let's hope not).

For you US guys I purchased mine (10lbs) at QC supply (farm supply) for $60.98 plus shipping to Maui (all shipping cost to Hawaii is bad). The link below takes your right to the web site.

Carhartt & Dickies Clothing, Fans & Ventilation, Livestock & Swine Supplies - QC Supply Catalog

10 lbs makes more than 100 gallons I think they said on the insert sheet.

Re: What do you use to disinfect your loop ?

DR will be getting disinfectant tablets that will be packed in tubes of 10 tablets. They will be described as "Relyon" rather than Virkon....the maker renamed the 'human use' version of Virkon as Relyon.... the Virkon name will be exculsively for vetrinary and livestock use. No pricing in place yet -- just a heads up so people aren't confused by the new name

Virkon, Virkon S, Pet Virkon - all the same stuff. Just have to have different labels dependng upon end use.

Incidentally, it is great stuff, but be careful with your clothes as it can stain them - as my new trousers found out!! Smells great too!
Someone once told me there's more quality control to an otherwise identical produc.
I myself use EW80 des. It's primary use is for rebreathers and other protective clothing....
