![]() ![]() ![]() | I am currently a senior in high school and am planning to enter college this next fall. I am wanting to design and build rebreathers for a living. What kind of engineering should I major in? I really want to major in marine biology and minor in some type of engineering. I am hoping to design and build a rebreather that is similar to the meg. PLease help as I am lost! Thank you. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Home built Rebreather NEWBIE! School Help what side of the rebreather do you want to design. the electronics in order to do the electronic you will need to understand instrumentation and embeded controller (ie. pics) the mechanical side a good systems basic class is a nice start, a class in machining so what you design can be built, a lot of research into rebreather designs. most everyone steals what they can from others out there.and a willingness to try. good luck atur school. remember common sence was never taught in a class room. rick |

![]() ![]() | As was said earlier... Rebreather design has many different subspecialties. EECS would cover some of the electronics but if you want to get more into the overall design try Mech Eng. They'll go into all the requisite stuff like Material sciences, Fluid Mechanics, etc. I've also found that just getting involved goes a long way. Take a RB cert class and start diving them. See what works and what doesn't. Read all you can find, doodle some designs on paper and play the "what if" game. Ask lots of questions. If you have company close by, stop by and say "hi". If it's what you really want to do, all things fall into place =) Rob |

School Help If Gordon's legacy is anything to go by then being a skilled machinist goes a long way. Or at least knowing how to use a lathe and mill. Secondly, getting good at rebreather diving is essential. Third, win the lottery as it isn't cheap. Designing a rebreather is very easy. The hardest parts are building it, using it and funding it.

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Home Built Rebreather NEWBIE! School Help Thanks for all of your help. I am looking into going to the Florida Institute of Technology, majoring in marine biology and minoring in mechanical engineering. That way I will be fairly close to cave country! |

School Help Start building one right now , as you continue to explore and immerse into academia you will find your way, no doubt. You will find the new challenges that plague the rebreather industry as the present them selves, by the time you get done with under grad work you should have a vision of whats needed to continue. If you skip college and go to work as a tradesmen you will probably have more luck and money in the end. ![]()
