![]() | Re: When did YOU jump? I took the Jump at 23 dives if buying an inspiration counts. I took another year to get enough dives to take my mod 1 class. I new 5 minutes bottom time on a 100' dive just wasn't going to cut it. I've Since moved on to the EVO. Hawkeye |

I got my IANTD Rebreather cert 10yrs ago with about 500 dives (after a 15min dive on the Cis Lunar MkIII -- how times have changed ).I probably had about 1700 dives and about 8yrs OC trimix when I started homebuilding and around 2k when I bought my KISS.

![]() | Re: When did YOU jump? Hi all, VERY new here and trying to learn. I'm not a rebreather diver yet but I plan to take that step within the next year or so. One thing I have heard in the past is that a diver need not have a bajillion hours (VERY exact technical term.....grin) on OC gear to make the switch to Rebreather. Some instructors prefer newer divers as they don't have to correct any long standing bad habits. So as someone who is getting back to diving and sees their diving going in a technical direction, that is to say, deep Great Lakes wrecks, Ice diving and hopefuly wreck hunting -- I am looking at the Rebreather as a viable alternative to a huge pile of OC tech gear. What say you on when to move to RB? While I know an instructor is important - more so than the agency they belong to and I intend to get the best training I can, I was curious as to just where in the dive profile (pun there) you were when you made the switch to Rebreather? Beginning rec type of diver, AOW, full boogie tec diver or what? Would you have changed when you decided to make the switch to Rebreather? I think most (being this is a RB site) would say they would have done it sooner as they love RB diving but how soon? What pitfalls do you see with moving to RB quickly after OC? I understand a cool head, and comfort underwater are important -- but lets assume as an OC diver you are ok being underwater, low vis doesn't bother you (everyone would like 100 ft viz but I have dove in 9 inch viz and while it sucks - doesn't make me go claustrophobic) when discussing when to move over from OC to Rebreather? Thanks, I've got around 250 dives over about 11 years and recently completed normoxic trimix. The factors driving my descision are essesntially gas efficiency, cost of helium, more efficient deco, and weight being a big concern (my gear weighs about the same as I do). When I first started diving the availability just wasn't there and the with the cost of the existing units at the time ($15-20K) it just wasn't an option. I also don't want to take full trimix twice. Whether you take that step sooner or later I think that perfecting your OW skills should be your first step, especially deco procedures and technical nitrox. If something goes wrong it could turn into an OC dive and you would want that experience to fall back on. As for your OC gear, most of that stuff should still be useful. You'll still need bailout bottles and regs. Good luck and dive safe, Owen |

Cheers, Dave (I am getting out of Algeria tomorrow) Cooper. good on ya where do you get that sort of wife ? My one just banned the breather out of the bedroom - scrubber is allowed to live next to my side of teh bed so. Her comment was - now that you have that aluminium frame (i changed the inspo housing to a custom made aluminium cage, so I can mount bigger dil cylinders to her (the inspo - not the wife) ) this looks to ugly So her plan was to ban the gear into the garden shed - but now i convinced her that i am allowed to do some excavation under the house and but my workshop there. But back to teh topic - I had 150 OC dives, than met a nice guy (Pete Mesley ) at a trip to the Mikhail Lermentov, and was sold (at a very reasonable price) on a new breather.Haven't done deco or deep on her (the inspo - not the w.... ) will wait for another 50hours, had her to 60 meters on air diluent so ( I know not the best gas choice - but possible)Cheers chris
